Huh? How come Kylie Jenner was a Victoria’s Secret angel and not Kendall?
Glitter, glamour and bouncy blow-outs: last night it felt like the world was healing a bit again, as Los Angeles was back in the spirit of Victoria’s Secret. After a poor comeback and almost-great shows the lingerie brand is back in business. We finally saw good, big wings, all sorts of old ‘Angels’ and (our prayers have been heard) the expensive fantasy bra. Who wore this 50 million bra, you wonder? Well: none other than Kylie Jenner was the surprise guest of the evening. We understand that she draws attention, but I still wonder… Why did they choose Kylie and not her model sister and former Angel Kendall?
Kylie surprised everyone on the Victoria’s Secret catwalk
That not every old Angel would return, we already knew, but that Kylie would walk the pink catwalk? That was truly unexpected. She was nowhere to be seen in the promotion surrounding the show or in backstage footage. It was a real surprise: during the show the lights dimmed and suddenly a brunette figure appeared. Slowly she walked into the spotlight and suddenly everyone saw it: there stood Kylie Jenner. Not as a lingerie model or as an Angel with big pink wings like Doutzen Kroes, but with the highlight of the evening: the fantasy bra.

After years of absence and fan requests, the biggest artwork of the Victoria's Secret-collection is back. And not with a small bra with some Swarovski stones ‘because the fans want it, but they actually don't have the money’ like before, but with a banger: this bra, which is a collaboration with the jewelry brand Jacob & Co, is adorned with more than four thousand real diamonds. In the middle of the bra hangs a large yellow diamond of more than seventy-five carats. This thing, which could just as well have hung in a museum, is surrounded by smaller, white diamonds that bring the total carat weight of the bra to more than thirteen hundred. With so many carats, this is not just a new fantasy bra, but the most expensive ever made.
Why was Kylie chosen and not her sister Kendall Jenner?
This top-secret stunt is of course a very clever marketing move. Kylie is one of the biggest names at the moment, so it makes sense that Victoria’s Secret chooses her to breathe new life into the fantasy bra. But there is also a lot of criticism about it. Online, there are plenty of reactions that Kylie was really not the best option. I actually understand them, because why choose an influencer who has no modeling experience? Of course, no one can deny that Miss Jenner is no nobody. With her immense influence on pop culture and her makeup empire, she is one of the biggest stars at the moment. But yes. Does that mean it is justified that an influencer like Kylie gets a spot that others train for years and dream of, just handed to her because she is rich and famous? No, certainly not.
Viewers on the internet are sure: there are plenty of models with years of experience who would have been a much better choice. Like the former Angels Romée Strijd or Frida Aasen, for example. Or like her sister: Kendall Jenner. Although I personally really like Kylie, it seems like a strange choice to overlook a trained model for her influencer sister. Kendall has already walked for Victoria’s Secret. She has experience on the catwalk as a real model, Kylie does not at all. If you see the fantasy bra as the crown of a modeling career, Kendall feels like a more fitting choice than her reality star sister. Victoria’s Secret apparently preferred the biggest surprise and the most attention.

Kylie rocks the show, but was she the absolute best choice? Probably not. Aside from this little slip-up, I must say that the show was really better again. There were good models, the blow-outs were big, there were great performances from Tate McRae, Megan Thee Stallion & Katseye, and there were massive wings. All in all, it was a success and that's a good thing. Because the world could use a bit more glitter and inclusivity.
