Help, after the bare nail trend, Hollywood is now skipping another makeup product

Yes, you heard it right. After the transparent Japanese manicure there's another ‘bare trend’ sweeping Hollywood. It suddenly seems like everyone has forgotten their makeup bag, because the makeup? It's hard to find. Recently, Zendaya walked the red carpet in a stunning Matières Fécales dress with a no-makeup look on her face. The internet exploded with tutorials, and this trend seemed to spread like flowing ketchup. Why ketchup, you might wonder. Well, it's because you suddenly see this makeup everywhere. Besides a natural base, there's one product that's being left out: mascara. No one wears mascara anymore, and I think that's silly.

The numbers don't lie: mascara is declining in popularity
Where once eyelashes couldn't be ‘spider-like’ enough, more and more stars seem to have enough to walk around every night with micellar pads on their eyes. You see it in Hailey Bieber's Miu Miu campaign, at Alexa Demie during the premiere of Euphoria, at Sabrina Carpenter and also with Zendaya. Famous makeup artists choose to leave mascara behind, but why do they do that? In my eyes, mascara is the key ingredient to elevate a low-effort look to the next level. It's the product that puts your look on the map. Eyeshadow looks better, your eye color pops more, and your eyes look more elegant; it makes everything better. And yet, interest in this product seems to be declining further.
We know this from the numbers. It's not just celebs ditching mascara: there have been fifteen percent fewer Google searches for mascara compared to February. Even the ‘ordinary mortal’ is less interested in that black stuff. Since the not-so-aggressive takeover by the clean girl movement, makeup is becoming less about a colorful eyeshadow look and more about an undetectable look that still makes you look better.

Mascara is the heart of your look
As I just hinted, I really need to share my opinion. How can you not use mascara? Every time I see such a look, something is missing. Even when it comes to Zendaya's beautiful face. Mascara is the glue that brings your makeup together. Sorry, but most of us are not Sabrina Carpenter. Without that black gold, we look like we've flown back from Tokyo to the Netherlands and haven't had an hour of sleep.
And despite thinking that such a look is simpler, I unfortunately have to disagree. By not using mascara, you ensure that the rest of your makeup doesn't stand out. You'll have to put in more effort to bring your face to life. Your blush needs to be more intense, your eyeshadow brighter, your eyeliner bigger, and yes: your lip liner darker. Now that can certainly be a beautiful look, but that's not the point. This is not clean girl propaganda that gets you out the door in five minutes without mascara. You can certainly try that, but in the end, you won't save any time. The few minutes you save are now spent enhancing the other makeup.

So no. If you ask me, the answer is loud and clear: mascara must stay. You can certainly switch it up with a lighter layer or a brown variant, but truly abandoning mascara? We can't do that. Once you remove one of the biggest pillars, the entire makeup industry collapses. Believe me.
How to nail the bare makeup look (if you still try).
Ignore my wise advice and want to match this calm vibe? Then luckily I know which steps you can take. Like...
1. The eyeliner tour
You can go on the eyeliner tour. If you don't use mascara, you'll need to pull more from the closet to make your eyes shine. You can do this by creating a wing with eyeshadow. Eyeliner doesn't have to be a thick Sharpie line, no, no. It can also be a faded, brown wing made with brown or burgundy eyeshadow.
2. Let the blush speak for itself
Where you normally try to avoid blush blindness, without mascara it's essential (yes, essential!) to use more blush. How else are you going to ensure you don't look like you've fallen asleep with your makeup on? You want to look fresh and awake. By adding more blush, you get a younger and fresher appearance.
3. Go heavy on the eyeshadow
Not a fan of eyeliner? Then you can also opt for a (sparkly) eyeshadow that steals the show. You can make this as simple or as difficult as you want. Choose an easy glitter eyeshadow or balm that draws attention. If you want to experiment a bit more, you can go all out with cut creases, bright colors, or colored eyeshadow wings.

4. Make it glowy
If you're ditching mascara, you might as well go all out for the no makeup makeup look. Lightly fill in your eyebrows, but don't shape them into a different form than they naturally have. Add some bronzer and blush for warmth. To really finish it off, go for something that all these ‘ethereal’ looks have: a glow. Grab the most glowy balm or highlighter you have. Spread it over your forehead, nose, cheeks, and cheekbones. This now draws attention, not your ‘naked’ eyes.
