From Tinder date to murderer: this Netflix doc is next level bizarre

If there's one thing I want to watch right away, it's the latest true crime documentaries on Netflix. So off I went again last night. The latest: Should I Marry a Murderer? Three episodes, and once again such a bizarre one. This time not American, but one from Scotland.
A love story that goes just a bit too fast
I was immediately drawn in again. It starts off quite innocently. Caroline Muirhead, a proper mega-smart pathologist from Glasgow, meets Sandy through Tinder. He is attentive, lives in the countryside, he is warm and exactly what she needs after a bad relationship. In no time, they are in love. And even faster engaged. Because he asks her to marry him quite quickly. While her parents haven't even met him yet.
The confession where everything turns
Then comes the moment when you really pause. Caroline asks him to tell her everything before they step into marriage. And then comes a story…. Sandy tells her that he, together with his twin brother, hit a man years earlier and then buried him. No police, no ambulance.
Not a small secret….. No gray area. Just hit and buried. How then?
And then follows an inner struggle. Caroline, finally in love and engaged after so many years. Wedding dress already (online) ordered. What I found so bizarre about this, I still understood her. You see her thinking, doubting, rationalizing. As if she is trying to convince herself that this can still be saved.
What do you do when your fiancé turns out to be a murderer?
Caroline ultimately does what you hope: she goes to the police. Caroline is, after all, a doctor. You think, ethically this can be done. The family of the man who was hit has been searching for years.
But that is not the case.
Because there is too little evidence, Sandy and his brother are released again. And Caroline suddenly finds herself in a bizarre predicament. She has to stay close to him while simultaneously trying to gather evidence.
I was really watching this with my mouth open.
The moment when you get angry
What makes this documentary really different is what happens next. Or rather: what doesn't happen.
Caroline puts her life on the line to help the police. And what does she get in return? Barely any protection, little guidance, and above all the feeling that she is alone.
It is so intensely painful. Because you see how she slowly slips away while she is trying to do the right thing.
Why you keep watching
That is really mainly due to Caroline herself. She is so intensely honest, smart, and incredibly open about her own choices. You want to understand why she stays. Why she doesn't leave. You see that she is completely losing herself. A lot of footage, her own videos that she has made show how bizarrely far she has let herself go. Alcohol, drugs. This super sweet proper Caroline has completely lost herself.
My final judgment
Should you Should I Marry a Murderer? watch? Uhhhh: Yes. Absolutely.
This is definitely a series that sticks with you. Confusing until the end, also exciting until the end, and yet you understand her so much (blinded by love).
It mainly shows you how thin the line can be between love and total denial.
