Preparing for a first date
A friend of mine went on a date last week. A blind date. Obviously after several texts, swapped photos and a few calls, but they had never met each other and that is pretty nerve wrecking. We discussed the preparation details in length during the weeks leading up to The Date. Because that is what women do. During our many conversations (some of them hysterical calls in the middle of the night): “WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?!” it became very clear that there are several handy things to do in preparation for the date, so I am hereby sharing the insiders tips & tricks with you. So do you have a date coming up soon? Don’t panic, it will be fine. Come on then you prince on a white horse.
Plan in when to wash your hair
During The Date, you want your hair to look va-va-voom and if you’re one of those whose hair always looks va-va-voom, then a) I hate you (not really) and b) skip over this point because its not for you. For those who do not always have perfect hair, it’s important to plan in when to wash your hair. Jet for example finds that her hair is boring and lacklustre on the day of washing itself, and I on the other hand find that my hair looks best when just washed on the day of The Date (TD). So you need to know, plan and keep it in consideration.
What to wear and when?
We’ve been through this very point in detail before, you can read it here. I’d like to add an important tip: don’t get dressed till the very last moment because you never know what could happen, like accidentally spilling something or getting a stain or some other mess on your carefully selected outfit, which will lead to panic and stress.
The calm your nerves drink
If your nerves are really getting the better of you, then I suggest a little bubbly or other drink. A mini bottle of Moët et Chandon can work wonders. But take care, because it can also go horribly wrong. I had my calm-the-nerves drink during the WHAT SHOULD I WEAR-session, which resulted in me throwing my clothes around all through my house, drinking glass after glass and eventually ending up a little drunk. Luckily the evening still turned out okay and TD was a success, but it was touch and go for a while.
The Nervous pee
Don’t fall for it! I have tested this theory by trial and tribulation, that final nervous pee before leaving leads to frequent toilet visits the whole night. If you keep it in, or just ignore it, you’re safe. Giving in means an evening of frequently walking the long road from table to toilet, not fun for anyone.
Be prepared to raid your savings account
Despite the fact that I had a relatively feminist upbringing, I still feel that a man should pay for the first date. This is a discussion that we can have in the future, but for now the man is paying. That said, you should always have enough money available to pay for the bill if needs be. Raid your savings account if necessary if has suggested an expensive restaurant, because you need to be able to cover the bill in the worst case scenario.
Essentials for your bag
Then, sort and pack everything into your bag. The following things have to go with:
– Mini deo
– Samples of your favourite perfume.
– Freshening towels for down there.
– Powder.
– Gum.
– Telephone charger.
– Make-up remover wipes for the next morning in case you stay over at His place.
– Toothbrush.
– Clean underwear for the next day.
When to arrive?
Yeah, we discussed this long and hard. Too early or a little late? Actually you should just turn up on time, but the big question is do you want to be there before or after him? The benefit of turning up early is that you get the best seat at the table, the benefit of turning up later is that he gets to perform a full body check and you get to show off your carefully selected outfit and killer body. Early or late, it’s up to you.
