Fashion

Lazily shopping with my laptop on my lap is great if I’m looking for a specific item. But you have to admit, nothing beats looking at and comparing tangible things. For this very reason and because I’m a shopping addict and a little lazy, I regularly dive into the valhalla known as the department store. The main benefit is that you get a good idea of what’s en vogue at this moment in a relatively short time.

Voila, this is my list of favourites, obviously not the only important addresses, but the ones that should be highest on the to-do list of any regular follower of fashion.

Sometimes I need to hop over to Paris for one day for a meeting or press presentation, not much time so the department store Le Bon Marche is a lifesaver. All the big names are there like Dries van Noten, Jil Sander, Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant, spread out over two adjacent buildings. The ground floor of the one store is taken up by a super de luxe supermarket that should absolutely not be missed. The ground floor of the other store (also Le Bon Marche) is for accessories and cosmetics. And if you go, don’t forget to pay a visit to the lingerie department.

You must have heard: The Amayzine girls are leaving for New York in two weeks for Fashion Week. Besides looking forward to the shows, I’m also excited to see what’s on sale at Barney’s. I also always go to Bergdorf & Goodman for the very best and biggest collection of shoes. Don’t ignore the window displays either, they’re often an absolute creative highlight.

Department Stores seem to be a London speciality. Most of them have cafes and restaurants in them, which are the perfect stop off place to recharge the shopping batteries. Many tourists head immediately to the well known Harrods but I prefer the more modern Harvey Nichols, which is very close by and made famous by the AbFab TV series. You can lunch outside on the 5th floor when the weather is good  and it’s very close to the food department, I always marvel at the wonderfully packaged pastas and tins of tea. A must for any fashionista is the department store Selfridges that is positioned in-between all the commercial high street stores on Oxford street. Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabbana and Stella McCartney; they‘re all there.

And then there is, of course, our very own good old Bijenkorf that seems to get better with each season and whose high-end brand range seems to be growing. Their shoe department is amazing, they have some of the best designer bags on sale and the ladies clothing section is packed full of prestigious brands.

Have fun!
