HAIR AND THE CITY
The city guide to great hair
Call it one of the side effects of our jobs. You travel and so you discover. Not all of our discoveries are ground breaking historical finds but nevertheless they can be helpful to know. Like the random link between your hair and the city you are in. So here we go, in case we ever forget.
New York
So here your hair is just plain old awful. The water is very calcified making your hair untamable. There are special shower heads that filtrate the water if you’re looking to sprinkle a bit of silky and smooth water on the top of your head. Or you could ‘just rinse it with a bottle of Evian’: the wise words of a make up artist I know. Perhaps packing your hair straighter would be sensible to breathe new life into the slicked back ponytail look.
Milan
I don’t know if it is because of the pasta, or the oil, the garlic or the dry air but in Milan your hair always looks great, big and vivacious. Have a quick look here if you don’t believe me. And it just so happens that Milan is the perfect place for a romantic little getaway with your lover and very appropriate for plenty of photos. Of yourself. And your hair.
Rio de Janeiro
When our fashion editor Liesbeth was there (who happens to be the biggest critic when it comes to her own hair style) she was completely over the moon. About just about everything. And her hair just happened to be one of those things. Simply washing it with whatever shampoo her hotel provided and no fancy rinses using Perrier or Evian. Completely natural. She’s even contemplating going back again for a second time this winter.
Rome
I love Rome and if I could I would drop everything this instant and move there in a heartbeat, but when it comes to your hair and skin in Rome, it’s quite a struggle. After returning back to the Netherlands after a six month sabbatical I had a blemish of almost three centimeters from the rosacea that had built up after the many scooter trips in the polluted city (neatly omitted of course after a laser treatment, like it never even existed). And then there was the struggle my hair had to endure due to the humidity. So plan a trip, take plenty of photos of the city but none of you in the city. At least not if you want to look good in the photos.
Berlin
A while back our beauty editor Joss was in Berlin where she pretty much dropped her signature bun look. Why she did it, she has no idea, but her hair looked great.
Cannes
After a little field research it appears that the Côte is excellent for great hair. A little dry and a lot of volume. Nothing more to add.
copenhagen
Another one of Josselin’s favorites. Her hair was nice and polished, not stuffy but still fixated. I’ll be heading there Friday so I’ll update you on my own experience.
If you have any experiences to add to this thought-provoking chapter about hair and cities, email me. I’m working on a complete file.
