The bedroom
One of the side effects from my detox (I’m eating again but my drinking hasn’t reached it’s old level yet) is that in the evenings I am still full of energy. On moments I was usually hanging on the couch with a glass of wine I am now active. Tonight I have my bedroom on my schedule. Because after an objective look over I spotted all kinds of things that don’t really belong in there. I’d love it if you joined me on my venture.
Of course I called my organizer friend for help and she gave me the following advice. First of all she explained the importance of a tidy bedroom. It’s your resting place; your room should reflect that. Clutter doesn’t really belong anywhere but certainly not in your bedroom. Clutter holds a grudge, stares at you when you’re in bed. Very disturbing. You want to surrender to a good night’s sleep or go for a playful roll in the sack. Hockey sticks, single socks, dresses that need to go to the dry cleaners and stacks of DVD’s do not contribute to a positive result.
GET RID OF EVERYTHING THAT DOESN’T BELONG THERE
For example I have a picture of my mother-in-law on my bedside table. I cherish that picture but it’s not exactly the aphrodisiac one would wish for. It was off to the study with her. I replaced it with a good version of myself. My friend dares to go as far as to claim that a cluttered room prevents you from resting sufficiently.
The suitcases I fail to take to the attic because my next trip has already been planned don’t improve the overall atmosphere. Out they go. Maybe not to the attic, maybe to a hallway I don’t use frequently.
Clutter holds a grudge, stares at you when you’re in bed
My friend is so right. I have four baskets in my closet for the purpose of keeping things out of sight but right now they are so full of junk I hardly dare to look at them. I’m emptying them out tonight and will get rid of the clutter. My friend says I can easily transport things straight into the garbage can because if I haven’t used it for a whole year, I didn’t miss it. An easy send off.
An organized bedroom is great
How great is a hotel room? Put a little bouquet of flowers beside your bed, an aromatic candle or a pretty book that you can elegantly leaf through in bed. Make sure you have ironed sheets they are much more comfortable and looks prettier as well.
Lots of people threat their bedroom like a shed
Well you won’t after this. Try looking at your own room through someone else’s eyes. Why are items arranged the way they are? Does everything have a function? Do you really need all that stuff? Can your cleaner really clean with all that clutter? Are you really going to read those books that are hidden beneath the pile of magazines you have in the corner of your room?
A clean room is great so throw out the clutter
I for example have lots of duvet covers, yet I only really use three. According to my organizer friend this is the perfect number: one for on the bed, one for in the washing machine and one for in the closet (a spare). In case someone, let’s say a child, becomes sick on it….
Stick to your bedroom rituals
In the morning you open the curtains and make the bed. It will only take you a minute and will give you a satisfying feeling every time you come into the bedroom. I think a made up bed is the same as wearing pretty underwear. No one can see it from the living room or through your clothes, but unconsciously you have it all covered.
Tip: If making bed is not your specialty buy a bedspread. Pile on lots of pillows and bring out the Charlotte in you.
