KEY EXCHANGE
It’s absolutely great that you’ve come to the stage of exchanging house keys. Very handy but it can also be very dangerous. Let me put it this way: every pro has a con.
A big pro is of course you no longer need to stress out over each other’s schedules. You have a dinner, he has a birthday party, you sleep at his place and can come in whenever you like without having to wait and vice versa. When my lats boyfriend and I exchanged keys it brought huge relief at the time. He was busy, I was busy yet we could see each other and sleep over at each other’s place without turning it into a military operation. For that reason I am definitely for exchanging keys. I always enjoyed the moments I came home from work and he was already there stirring away in pots and pans or lounging on the couch. It had a homey comfy feel to it.
But there are cons. A friend of mine was lying on the couch, sick as a dog, wearing sweats with holes, three sweaters, hair upright and no make-up. Then her boyfriend, with whom she had exchanged keys just two weeks before, sent her a Whatsapp that he was standing at the front door. I live three stories up. Meaning half a minute to minimize the damage, but she lived on the ground floor so no escape here.
“You know, just so he doesn’t see you live in a pigsty.”
Another con is that you have to keep your place tidy, ALL the time. When I’m expecting male company I make sure it looks okay. You know, just so he doesn’t see you live in a pigsty. But when they come and go as they please you never know when the place has to look presentable. This drastically intensifies your daily tasks.
Another con is the responsibility. Losing your own keys suck, losing his keys is a whole different story. Men find it annoying that the average woman is capable of losing her right leg, let alone it involving stuff that belongs to him.
In short, you have to be presentable 27/7, keep your house tidy at all times but hey, it all comes back to you in the form of love. Long live love! Totally kidding of course. I haven’t given up my faith just yet.
