I’m always in for a dazzling exhibition but I don’t always fly across the globe to get there. So when Louis Vuitton had an exhibition in Shanghai, Tokyo, LA and Seoul I had to pass. But now, now it’s in London. Almost around the corner and I can really recommend the occasional dip into the world of Louis Vuitton by stepping into Nicolas Ghesquière shoes and getting a whiff of the new fall/winter collection 2015/2016 up close.
This is the third exhibition in a row where you can see the creative process of a Louis Vuitton collection. And now this isn’t just any exhibition where you can stroll past walls displaying prints, nope, you seriously step into ‘the world.’ It’s a kind of experimental contraption that takes you on a trip through 13 rooms divided over two floors, showing you each step of the creative process right up until it’s hanging in your wardrobe.
Let’s start at the beginning. You walk into the Louis Vuitton venue in Paris, which is presenting the Autumn/Winter 2015/2016 show. Then you continue into a revolving room where you hear models discuss the collection, the heritage and you see them walking towards you.
It’s rather difficult to explain as you may have noticed, cause its way too cool yet dizzy making. So hop on to the next room where you can sit Nicolas Ghesquière’s desk. It sounds anciently off but we’re talking digital desks here.
Put your hands on it and the screen starts moving, you see Nicolas’ hands whizzing around putting his ideas on paper. Very special. It’s like bringing out the fashion designer in you. So when the designs are made, the leather is cut and sown then off you go to the next space where you can see the collection from front row seats. On digital screens you see the models walking towards you, you can stay and watch as long as you like, here you have more time than all those dolls sitting front row last February.
After the show you see madame Anne&Anne. Sounds like a funny duo but they are really talented when it comes to handwork, right down to the refined details. Buttons, beads; everything is applied with the greatest skill and care. Beautiful to see this in real life, even more so when you consider the fact that over 1000 actions are needed to make one piece. After the show and the handwork you come into my favorite room; everything is white and sculptures made off real models display Louis Vuitton’s iconic items. Then there’s another favorite room that shows the whole collection. Up close. You can almost feel the stiches, prints and leather with the tip of your nose. It’s like having your very own walk-in-closet.
All in all quite the tour, ending in a huge space filled with stickers. The kind of cool stickers you’d find on Louis Vuitton luggage and you’re allowed to pull the one with your initials off the wall. So very modish. You understand that my nameless little suitcase has become something very special.
Okay, so I’ve taken you on a written tour but if you really want the experience book yourself a ticket on the next flight to London and really step into the world of Louis Vuitton. It’s so very fabulous I know for a fact you won’t be disappointed and you’ll return home inspired and elevated. I Promise.
Ik ben altijd wel te paaien voor een goede expositie, maar vlieg er niet altijd heel de wereld voor over. Dus toen Louis Vuitton een expositie had in Shanghai, Tokyo, LA en Seoul moest ik die éven aan mij voorbij laten gaan. Maar nu, nu is die in London. Bíjna om de hoek en ik kan je vertellen dat het een enorme aanrader is om je te laten onderdompelen in de wereld van Louis Vuitton, in het jasje van Nicolas Ghesquière te kruipen en de fall/wintercollectie 2015/2016 van enorm dichtbij te besnuffelen.
De expositie is dus de derde in rij waarbij je het hele creatieve proces ziet van een collectie van Louis Vuitton. En nu is het dus niet zomaar een expositie waarbij er wat prints aan de muur hangen en je daar braaf langs kunt lopen, neen, je stapt serieus in de wereld. Het is een soort experimentele installatie die je meeneemt in een trip van 13 kamers, verdeeld over twee verdiepingen, waarbij je stapje voor stapje het creatieve proces ziet dat wordt afgelegd tot de hele collectie naar je garderobe wordt getild.
We beginnen bij het begin. Je stapt binnen in de venue van Fondation Louis Vuitton in Parijs waar de show Autumn/Winter 2015/2016 gepresenteerd is. Vervolgens loop je naar een ronddraaiende kamer waar je modellen hoort praten over de collectie, over de heritage van Louis Vuitton en je de modellen op je af ziet komen lopen.
Zoals je merkt is dat gewoon niet uit te leggen, want het is veel te cool, maar ietwat draaierig. Dus hop, door naar de volgende ruimte, waar je plaats kunt nemen aan het bureau van Nicolas Ghesquière. Ook dat klinkt misschien een beetje oubollig, maar het zijn digitale bureaus.
Leg je je hand erop, dan gaat het scherm bewegen en zie je de handen van Nicolas aan de slag om zijn ideeën op papier te zetten. Heel bijzonder. Alsof je de fashion designer in jezelf naar boven haalt. Dus staat dat alles eenmaal op papier, is het leer gesneden en zijn de stukken genaaid, dan loop je naar de volgende ruimte waar je serieus frontrow de collectie kunt bekijken. Op digitale schermen zie je de modellen op je af komen lopen. Je kunt zo lang blijven zitten als je wilt en dat betekent dat je toch nét iets langer de tijd hebt dan alle poppetjes die frontrow zaten afgelopen februari.
Na de show zie je mevrouw Anne & Anne. Klinkt als een komisch duo maar zijn toch echt behoorlijke talenten in handwerk, die met alle verfijnde details aan de slag gaan. Knoopjes, kraaltjes en alles zie je ze met liefde bevestigen. Echt prachtig om dat in real life te zien, als je je bedenkt dat er zo’n 1000 handelingen nodig zijn om één piece te vervaardigen. Na de show en het handwerk kom je in mijn lievelingsruimte die tótaal wit is en waar modellen in sculpturen zijn nagemaakt om de iconische items van Louis Vuitton te presenteren. Daarna eigenlijk een tweede lievelingsruimte waar je de totale collectie kunt aanschouwen. Van heel dichtbij. Dus met je neus erop kun je alle stiksels, alle printss en al het handwerk zien. Alsof je je eigen inloopkast hebt.
Ten slotte, ja, het is een behoorlijke tour, kom je in een ruimte waar je duuzenden stickers ziet hangen. Denk stickers waar alle veel te coole LV-koffers mee volgeplakt zijn en waar je jouw initialen van de muur kunt trekken. Ook weer zo cool. Je begrijpt dat mijn naamloze koffertje nu opeens zoveel bijzonderder wordt.
Al goed. Ik heb je nu even op schrift meegenomen in deze tour, maar wil je het echt meemaken, dan boek je een vlucht naar Londen en stap je de werkelijke wereld van Louis Vuitton in. Het is bijzonder en ik kan je vertellen dat het écht niet zal tegenvallen en je vol inspiratie en rijkheid naar buiten huppelt.
