Fashion

It’s that time of the year again when Europe is starting to buzz and bubble with fashion. Starting with the Men’s fashion week in Milan through the Haute Couture shows in Paris and this week the fashion set landed in Berlin for the summer edition of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin that kicked off on Tuesday.

That meant we were on a plane at the crack of dawn ready to take a big nose dive in all fashion fun the Germans had to offer. The square in front of the Brandenburger Tor was the eye of the Berlin fashion tornado as always. So as soon as we were settled in we made our way over there.

The big show of the day was by Marc Cain who had invited us to come backstage and get a glimpse of the behind the scenes craziness. What goes on there might be best described as a buzzing beauty factory. Towering models left and right, getting groomed, painted, brushed and sprayed by expert hair and make-up artist of L’Oréal Professionnel and Maybelline. The Marc Cain models were all given futuristic nude makeup and wore their hair long with tiny waves.  A look that would turn out to be a perfect fit with the theme of the collection.

After talking to a few of the models about their fashion week preparations and modeling dreams we made our way back to the front of the tents where the high profile fashion crowd was making their arrival. Veteran supermodels Elle Macpherson and Eva Herzigová among them. Both dressed in white Marc Cain ensembles these nineties legends, respectively 51 and 42 years old, looked absolutely amazing. We couldn’t keep our eyes of them as they moved towards the front row. And neither could anyone else. It took a small army of security guards to pry the fans and photogs away and clear the runway for the show.

Under the slogan ‘Future Romance’ – romantic concepts reinterpreted in a modern way – Marc Cain presented the looks of the S/S 2016 collection. Inspired by the seventies film Picnic at Hanging Rock, attention focused on romantic looks employing lace, crochet effects, embroidery and pearls. Sending out a lovely ethereal vibe. During the finale the models skipped over the runway like dancing hippie angels. “The show was really inspirational – I just love the romantic style of the 70s”, Eva commented. “It was a wonderful presentation”, ‘The Body’ agreed. “This is the first time I have visited Berlin Fashion Week and I came especially for the Marc Cain show.”

After the show Marc Cain hosted an exclusive VIP cocktail party on the rooftop terrace of the gorgeous Hotel de Rome. Yours truly turned out to be one of those VIP’s, as were Elle and Eva. Together we enjoyed a Riesling or two (In Elle and Eva’s case it was water. You don’t maintain those looks by grabbing every cocktail you see) and Berlin Fashion Week was off to a wonderful start.
