Water boven water
The best lunches are the ones that are spontaneous. Like this one with wine on the table, shared club sandwiches and children running around having fun. Water was ordered, with bubbles, but when the waitress arrived with a bottle of Sourcy I sighed, “ Oh. Sourcy…”
Everyone at the table gave me a puzzling look and asked me to clarify, turning me into a mega snob right then and there. When I asked the waitress if they had Pepsi she complied. Sourcy and Pepsi go hand in hand you see. Everyone got my point. Because, dear people, there are differences between cola brands and between champagne brands (more about this some other time) and there most certainly are differences between water brands. I will introduce you to some of my favorites.
Evian
The best water for during the day. The bottles are attractive and they even work with designers that create bottles you just want to keep. The water is soft and doesn’t have a metal aftertaste.
Badoit
I started drinking this because of a book I read. In this book the writer travels with the Tour de France, meets up with an old flame and spends his days drinking wine and mainly Badoit in the French countryside. The water tastes delicious at lunchtime. It has a light bubble and a hint of salt.
Perrier
Of course, Perrier. The bottles are so beautiful and so French. Order it on the Thalys and you’re in Paris already. It just takes one sip.
Voss
Karl Lagerfeld’s favorite. A little overpriced but it comes in a lovely bottle and drinks easily. €5,99 still doesn’t buy you a liter, which might cause a little grief.
Ferrarelle
The bubbles in this water are so light you never get a full feeling. Leggeremente frizzante is what the Italians say. Costs nothing and looks like a million bucks. Who will import this? I’ll be your best customer.
Spa Marie-Henriëtte
Spa red, sorry Spa-lovers, means the same to me as “boring”. Don’t you agree that: “I’ll have a Spa red”, sounds the same as, “I am so not in the mood for this party”? But Spa Marie-Henriëtte on the other hand is my kind of water. A slice of lemon, a twig of mint and you’re ready to go.
Cheers!
