What i eat during
Liesbeth and I have been planning our trip to New York for ages. We spent days in front of our mirrors twirling around in potential outfits, Liesbeth sat on her suitcase at least thirty times to close it (this meant loosing some shoes) and our toiletry bags are so full it’s really kind of insane.Well I guess you could say we’re prepared. Maybe I’m even a step ahead on this one because I like to fill my hand luggage with edible goodies. I’m sorry to say it but I can’t stand airplane food. So this has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I’m some kind of (annoying) health freak who stalls out Tupperware on her tray, it’s just a matter of taste. Liesbeth on the other hand can really look forward to her four square plastic meal and that’s the moment I pull out my Tupperware.
Because to be frank I arrive at my destination feeling much fitter if I bring my own food. Airplane food contains so much salt that your body locks up all moisture and often leaves you feeling bloated or windy (excuse me); all this can worsen your jetlag symptoms. But anyhow, this is what I bring and it’s all customs-proof.
(Spelt)crackers
If you want you can combine these with the piece of plastic cheese (if Liesbeth hasn’t stolen it) you find in the right hand corner of your tray. Or bring a small container of hummus with you. Make sure it doesn’t exceed the maximum of 100 ml or the customs officer with throw it in the bin.
boiled eggs
They are very filling and don’t smell. Handy. You’ll always find little sachets of salt and pepper inserted in your plastic cutlery set.
go nuts (a bag of them)
Very filling and this goes well with a beer. Oh no, water is actually the best thing to drink. During the whole flight drink lots of water.
DoorMeal
On Instagram I saw a pic of my co-healthy girls – Daisy from I love Health and Jenny from Healthyfans – ordering a meal at Doormeal. Everything passed straight through customs without a second glance. They had rice with shrimp and vegetables. Sounds great to me.
a piece of cake
I really like banana bread. Not actually a bread as it’s more of a cake. Very filling, healthy (!) and it hardly takes up any space in your bag. Aah well, bring some extra, as your neighbor will probably want some too.
bars
Now you can also stock up on a couple of bars. Always a good idea to take with you on vacation.
Tea
They have tea on the plane but it’s usually very strong and almost black tea. Not chill. Bring your own teabags and ask for hot water. You’ll just have to make your own party up there, won’t you?
Oh and another #tipfromjet, drink half a liter of coconut water before getting on the plane. It’s super hydrating and keeps you from drying out while you’re up in the air. It’s very dry up there you know and by drinking this you’ll only have to deal with half of the jetlag.
