URBAN JUNGLE
– You need these plants in your home –
Last week I told you how indoor plants can literally bring your interior to life. Indoor plants are super hip, help to purify the air in your house and reduce stress. Not to be scoffed at I’d say. So now that we know that the plant is a must, I hear you ask ‘but what sort of plant?’
.
The trend at the moment is bringing the botanical garden into your home. Think exotic and tropical: palm trees, tropical leaves. You don’t really need to create an entire palm grove in your house. What we are currently seeing a lot of is just one large plant or loose leaves in a vase. Here is our list of favorites:
Cactus
This is obviously the easiest option. A cactus is generally not very big and no major changes to your interior are needed so that the plant can fit. An even bigger advantage is that a cactus only needs a small drop of water every so often. He doesn’t need a lot of care and attention, so it couldn’t be easier.
Styling tip: Place small cacti in a bunch of white pots and place them all together. The overall look of this arrangement is very peaceful but makes for a classy still life.
Sparmannia
Do you have the space? Then a sparmannia plant is very cool. If you take good care of him (a Sparmannia drinks about two liters per day) it can grow up to two meters high and it has the most stunning large leaves.
Styling tip: To be honest, you almost need to be living in a loft to have the space that this plant deserves. But if you don’t have that space, it also doesn’t matter, because large plants provide the illusion of creating more space. Having one large, beautiful object is always better than a scattering of little bits and bobs.
bonsai tree
It always seems as though the most creative of people are also the owners of bonsai trees. The bonsai is an exciting tree because it grows in the direction that the individual tree feels like, so you never know just how the plant will develop.
.
Styling tip: The bonsai tree has beautifully intricate roots. Put the plant in a glass pot with the roots exposed, the plant will still grow and it looks very cool. A piece of art.
banana plant
This is the plant I was talking about. A relatively compact plant that is very happy in an airy house with lots of light. Of course you immediately think that a plant like this needs a lot of water, but that’s actually not the case. Weekly watering is enough for this guy. The leaves also don’t need much looking after and maintain their gorgeous tropical green color just fine.
.
Styling tip: A banana plant will not grow so large in climates that are cooler or have shorter winter days. It won’t matter how well you look after it, it will remain compact. So put it up on a table or a stool, give it lots of space and allow for it’s leaves to receive lots of light. The plant will be happy and in turn it makes for a great show piece.
monstera
The monstera plant belongs in the botanical garden and is thus THE plant that you need to have in your house. It’s leaves are ginormous. I guess the name says it all.
.
Styling tip: By itself, the monstera plant is very large, so I say: pick off it’s leaves and put them in a large glass vase. The leaves do just as well loose in some water as they do on the plant itself.
