10 LESSONS IN STYLE

FROM MILAN AND PARIS

I only just came back from both Milan (check out how it was here) and Paris (or here) and better yet, I’m about to head back to the latter (more about that later) so my appetite for fashion has been attained because when a trend starts somewhere, it’s definitely in these two fashion metropolises.

1.     Aviator

A little worried that you would have to bury your aviator glasses somewhere in the back of your closet? You can breathe a sigh of relieve. This fit is still very much accepted. So if you’re still lusting to buy a pair, you can get your hands on Dior’s Diorsplit, a more subtle version from Stella McCartney, Saint Laurent or MaxMara.

2.     Pajama-o-rama

Quite possibly the most comfortable trend there is. Pajama pants deluxe. Wear it with a top in the same print or even with a top that has a completely different print. Matching, clashing and mismatching are your three key words. And no, that doesn’t mean you have to top it off with a coat in a unicolor. When I was in Milan I opted for an embroided jacket from Dries van Noten.

3.     Dark lipstick

Please get some proper advice before you start working with darker colors. No one wants to walk around with a color that makes their teeth look like an unwanted shade of yellow. But if you’re able to pull this color off, you’ll be completely ‘en vogue.’ Just make sure the rest of your makeup is natural because lots of color is fun when it comes down to shoes and bags, but when it comes to make up, keep it light.

4.     Put a ring on it

Not just one, but four at a time. In a row actually. You’ll find the coolest rings at Alessandro Michele. I don’t know if it’s practical but hey, it looks good. We spotted them at Gucci and Dior and I’m sure high street stores will be filled with them in no time.

5.     The Burlington tights

People won’t expect too much from your dress if you’re wearing Prada’s beautiful tights with Burlington prints underneath. It almost makes me actually like the winter…

6.     Capes

The cape is still very much in and that makes me excited because it’s the easiest accessory to give your outfit that extra ‘umph.’ It’s warm, dressy, feminine and ideal for moments that you don’t want to wear a jacket but you want something light that will keep you warm. Perfect maternity wear too if you ask me. Last season the cape was more in the shape of a cloak, this spring the fitting is more robe-like. A bit fancier. I spotted it at SportMax, Prada and Paul Smith.

7.     Multiple earrings

One sole hole isn’t acceptable anymore. Sorry. Every hip girl has at least two in every ear and preferably even a third. The fun thing is that you’re supposed to wear a different earring in each hole (great for people like myself who always loses one) and while you’r add it, get your cartilage pierced too.

8.     Fire and flames

Red is the color for the spring. Not red red but more a wedding between orange and red, very seductive and feminine. From Dior to the affordable Maje and everything in-between.

9.     Mellow yellow

It’s such a shame that I’ve worn my bright yellow Fendi pumps so often that I really should lock them up for a while, but yellow is another color everyone needs to rock this spring. Especially a shade of mustard. Claes Iversen has a beautiful dress in his II by Claes Iversen collection, I spotted it at Hermès, at Valentino. The question is: where didn’t I see it?

10. Glass cases are hot

At Chanel and Dior we spotted bags that resembled cases for your glasses. A small, rectangular shaped bag that reminds you of your grandma’s glass case. Currently anything that even has the slightest hint of ‘grandma’ is considered hot, hence this bag. Want to be even more on trend? You’ll carry this bag around with another normal handbag like we saw at Dior.
