Dungarees are having a moment

Dungarees. It’s one of those items of clothing we all secretly desired because we thought it would make us look young and unintentionally pretty and sexy. But the results were mixed.

My friend and hair stylist Rachel recently wore one and then men that dropped by her salon said she was ‘daring’. She wondered whether men suddenly thought her interest in the sexes changed because of her outfit. Or did they just think the overall look was daring? She decided to just let it be and not ask them any more questions.

I got one a year ago from my love from a wonderful store called Blanc Bleu in Saint Tropez. Obviously it cost more than it should have, but we were in love. With each other and with the suit. The first time I wore it my nephew Sam (read all about my humiliation here) compared me to Mario from Super Mario. When I asked him whether or not that was a good thing, he jumped up enthusiastically. “Yesss. Mario Kart is soooo little (roughly the height of the couch is what he showed me) and thiiiiis fat.” Thus far my adventure with dungarees.

Last month I saw the art director of a popular magazine in the Netherlands. In super cool dungarees. Same story here, she whispered the number of the price tag in my ear because her hubby ‘didn’t really understand it’. The price tag and the suit. She paired it with heels and I thought she looked extremely cool, powerful and sexy.

Although a lot of people disagreed, I was still an advocate for team dungarees. And guess what? When I was in SoHo in New York, the coolest area in the world there’s one thing I kept bumping into. At Chanel, Alexander Wang, Alice + Olivia, Miu Miu, Rag & Bone. The dungarees. Everywhere. Not only in the window displays, but on the streets too. Covering the bodies of all the models and other cool New York girls. Dungarees. I’m telling you. They’re having a moment. Our patience has been rewarded.
