HOW BROOKLYN HAS CHANGED

Everyone already knows: Manhattan is só totally over and Brooklyn is the new hip & happening place you want to be at. But that also means the entire neighborhood is changing and not all of its inhabitants are pleased about it. Everything is getting more expensive, authentic stores are disappearing and making room for yet another hip donut or cupcake shop and you kind find overpriced cocktail bars on nearly every street corner.

The same thing is happening in Europe too. Take Amsterdam for example. The East and West side of the city used to be extreme no-go areas, however nowadays they are filled with the newest and most popular restaurants. However, nothing is as extreme as what’s been going down in New York. But then again, nothing will ever be more extreme than New York.

Photographer Kristy Chatelain spent years living in Brooklyn and saw the changes first hand. While strolling through her neighborhood, she decided to take snap shots of everything and now, years later, she has released her first series of photographs called Brooklyn Changing. Don’t mistake this book with being bitter and the “everything used to be better mentality.” Kristy was intrigued by all the changes. “I see it all as part of the cycle of change that is New York City,” said Chatelain. “It’s just sad that long time residents might be forced out in the process of gentrification, or basically have to watch their neighborhood become unrecognizable.”

And she makes a feasible point. Check out her series here.
