We left you behind after we flew over the city in a helicopter, something we are still reminiscing about. Look, it’s not cheap, but if you happen to be in New York, choose not to buy that one dress and spend that money on a flight. You can book it at HeliNY. You have various options in terms of duration and price, but I tell you: it’s an amazing outing.
Anyway, the following Monday we had a long day ahead. At 10 AM, Jet, her mother Karin, and I went to Brooklyn for a food & bike tour. The whole day cycling through Brooklyn past all kinds of delicious food spots: I’m all in for that. Our guide Tony from Brooklyn Bike Tours was possibly even more enthusiastic than we were and was bouncing with excitement to show us everything, absolutely everything.
The fact that we came from Amsterdam was reason enough for him to think that we could easily cycle for 6 hours (no joke) in 31 degrees. “You guys live on your bikes!” he shouted just after I nearly broke my neck due to exhaustion and the heat was clearly taking its toll. Jet will tell you in detail on Saturday where you need to go, but let me tell you this, Brooklyn is absolutely the shit. Seriously, what are we still doing in Manhattan!
After we had seen every sidewalk stone in Brooklyn, we grabbed three Coronas at a deli, got a lovely brown bag around them, and drank them on a bench with a view of the Manhattan skyline. A perfect end to the day.
The next day, Tuesday, it was so hot that we could hardly do anything. In the morning we went to a breakfast spot in our Harlem for some work, but when our terrace was flooded by the sun, we quickly fled to Central Park for some cooling in the shade of the trees. A pile of magazines and liters of water in the bag – nothing more to do.
That evening we had another big event on the agenda, namely a Yankees game. Yaaaaa! Since I saw a baseball game of the Blue Jays in Toronto I find that game surprisingly fun. I still don’t completely understand all the rules, but I get far enough to enjoy watching it. Jet and I bought caps and foam hands, but despite all our good intentions, the Yankees lost to the Orioles, the team from Baltimore. We ended the evening by, very American, watching the first Late Night presented by Stephan Colbert. And that was quite disappointing, but that’s beside the point.
Then Wednesday. It’s a bit less warm and we like that. We start the day again in our apartment behind the laptops and then around 2 PM take the subway to Meatpacking, where we had an amazing lunch at The Standard, where I am also writing this now. We are addicted to The Standard Grill but now, for the first time, we are at The Standard Plaza, and that feels very adventurous. Tip for anyone who ever goes: order a flatbread, it’s incredibly delicious. Tonight we are eating at another favorite; Balthazar.
In short, we are doing well. You are reading this on Thursday and that means May has to pack her bags today, because tomorrow morning she will board a plane to join us. Jet and I will also move to a hotel where the three of us will sleep, so the first week is really over and the Fashion Week part will begin. So I have to put away my quite beloved sneakers (yes I said that) and go back to living life in heels. Bye kids, until next time!
Our love affair with New York is still very much in full swing. Last time we updated you we had flown over the city in a helicopter. Something we still keep reminiscing about. Look, it’s not cheap, but if you happen to be in New York, drop the dress and spend your money on a flight. And HeliNY is the place to be. They have various options flight wise and price size, and let me tell you, a NY helicopter tour is definitely one for in the books.
We had a long day ahead of us the following Monday. At 10 AM our health editor Jet, her mother Karin and I headed to Brooklyn for a food & bike tour. Spending an entire day cycling around the area with a bunch of pit stops at fun little food joints: I’ll sign up for that any day. Our tour guide Tony from the Brooklyn Bike Tours might even have been more enthusiastic than we were. He was very ecstatic to show us anything and everything. And I mean everything.
The fact that we are from Amsterdam was reason enough for him to think we could easily spend 6 hours (no joke) in a blistering 31 degrees cycling around. “You guys live on your bikes?” is something he yelled after I nearly broke my neck out of pure exhaustion and the heat was clearly taking its toll on me. Jet will fill you in a little later on about all the details and all the must see places but let me tell you this, Brooklyn is definitely the shit. Seriously, what is everybody doing in Manhattan?!
After having seen pretty much every city street side walk Brooklyn has to offer, we dropped by a local deli to buy some Corona’s, which had been wrapped in brown paper bags, and we drank these on a little bench with a view of the Manhattan skyline. The perfect way to end the day.
The following day, Tuesday, was the day that it was practically impossible to go out and do something. In the morning we headed over to a small breakfast joint to do a bit of work, but as soon as the sun flooded our table we quickly headed on over to Central Park to cool down in the shade. With a pile of magazines and a few liters of water in hand.
In the evening we had another fun activity on our agenda’s: the Yankees! Woohoo! Ever since I visited Toronto and saw one of the Blue Jays’ baseball games I have been intrigued by the sport. I might not completely understand all the rules yet, but enough to actually enjoy watching it. Jet and I bought hats and foam hands yet despite all our good wishes, the Yankees lost to the Baltimore Orioles. We finished the night off by watching Stephan Colbert presenting his first Late Night show. A bit of a disappointment might I add.
And then there was Wednesday. The temperatures have dropped a bit but we like it. We started our day off working in our apartment and at around 2 PM we took the subway and headed towards the Meatpacking district to go have lunch at The Standard, which is where I am currently typing this update from. We are obsessed with The Standard Grill but for the very first time, we are seated at The Standard Plaza, which feels rather adventurous. Tip for anyone heading this way: order the flatbread, it’s mouth watering. And tonight we have dinner plans at another personal favorite: Balthazar.
All in all, life in New York is treating us well. By the time you read this it will already be Thursday which means May-Britt will be packing her bags for her Friday morning flight to the city. Jet and I will be moving our things from the apartment over to a hotel where the three of us will be spending the rest of the week and that is exactly when Fashion Week will be in full swing. Meaning: I’ll be ditching my beloved sneakers (yes I really did say that) to waddle around town in heels. That’s all for now ladies, till next time!
