Always a tricky one: how do you fly in style?
My last flying adverture was the most hectic one of all. From Amsterdam to Iceland and then through to Chicago, back to Iceland and then back to Amsterdam. And I can tell you this: picking out four airplane outfits is seriously stressful.
A couple years back, I didn’t do ‘airplane outfits’. I just boarded the plane in a pencil skirt and ridiculously high heels. Just because that was my style and maybe also a way of rebelling against the non-inspiring, comfortable flying gear. I don’t know what it is, but when I think of ‘easy travel wear’, I picture an African-style blouse, Jesus slippers and a vale pair of linen trousers. In the meantime I’ve found a third option that still don’t require Jesus sandals and over the top airport Lipstick Lady.
And so: 7 tips to look fashionable whilst being comfortable at the same time. Because yes ladies, it’s possible. Really.
- Wrap something around your neck
Even the most boring flight outfit can be pimped up with a nice scarf or shawl. Miranda Kerr, Selena Gomez and Blake Lively have already discovered the airport scarf.
2. The long, loose-fitting skirt
It’s looks more classy and it’s a lot more comfy than a pair of skinny jeans, especially on long flights. Just make sure it’s not made of fabric that easily creases, because that would be a shame.
3. The white blouse gives you a fresh look
Victoria Beckham (that was recently named best dressed traveler) wears a white blouse all the time at airports. Again, it’s important that it’s a non-creasing fabric. Pair it with a nice pair of pants (also more comfy than jeans) and you’ll be airport proof.
4. Celebrity sunglasses
A bit over the top for some people, but if you can’t be bothered with makeup during a long flight it’s okay to wear a nice pair of sunglasses at the airport. Spices up your outfit too. And you can hide your tired eyes as soon as you land. Practical AND stylish.
5. Bring a big fancy bag
A nice bag completes your travel outfit. Try to stick to one bag only, otherwise the look will turn out a bit messy. So no plastic bags or backpacks. Unless it’s this backpack, then it’s okay.
6. About those flats…
We can all agree that flying in heels (especially with fluid retention) isn’t a good idea. Opt for a trendy loafer. Simple slippers are a no go, but fancy slippers are fine.
7. Finish your look with your suitcase
I drag around a suitcase so often that it’s become an extended piece of my arm. And that extensions has to look cool. In a hot pink color, or with flamingo’s, or something else eyecatching. You can leave your dull grey grandma suitcase where it belongs. With your grandma.
