SERIOUS CASE OF binge eating?
Abort, abort, abort. This is how:
Ironically enough, I’m eating Ben & Jerry’s ice cream as I type this. I blame our Dutch health editor who sits across from me. She told me we still had some left over in our freezer. WHY? Why did she have to tell me this? You know I can’t contain myself and I’m going to eat it all.
“Just take one spoon full.” No girl, that’s not how it works when you’ve got an immense weak spot for food. Chips, cookies, chocolate, these are all things that get us binge-eaters to kick start our auto pilot and stuff ourselves. Sounds familiar? Acknowledgement is the first step. What can you do about it?
”No girl, that’s not how it works when you’ve got an immense weak spot for food.”
– Figure out what triggers your binge eating. Are you using food to avoid an emotion you’re dealing with? Is it frustration, stress, sugar cravings, loneliness or pure boredom? Once you’ve figured out what it is, you’ll find solutions. Okay, I figured out what my problem is: it’s hot out. I NEED ice cream.
– Look up photos of people who have not been able to control their urges and are no longer capable of getting out of bed on their own and don’t fit into a regular airplane stool. Hence the reason they never go on a summer holiday. My god, the terror. Always works for me. Bye bye ice cream.
– Or look up the hashtag #fitgirl on Instagram. That’ll keep your head out of the bowl of ice cream.
– Grab some gum or brush your teeth.
– Make it a topic you can discuss. We often get cakes and cookies and what not dropped off at our office but I always tell people to keep it far far away from me. Everything to avoid eating it. Letting people know that you don’t want it, will add pressure when they notice that you’re contemplating taking a teeny tiny bite.
– Don’t grab a BAG of chips, BOWL of ice cream, BOX of cookies, but take a small portion and hide the rest. You can even throw it out if you have to. Kinda a waste though, but still. It works.
– Drink a glass of water and eat some cottage cheese. These two will make you feel full and you won’t have the urge to start snacking on unhealthy things.
– Make sure you get plenty of sleep. A lack of sleep will make you feel hungry the rest of the day.
– Grab pen and paper and write down every time you’re on the urge of binge eating. It might help the next time you tackle a B&J.
– Eat before you do groceries. Going to the grocery store on an empty stomach is the worst thing you can do. You’ll end up leaving with a load of things you don’t need. And when you don’t have something at home, you won’t have to eat it. It’s that simple, people.
