You always hear people say that with the right shoes you can conquer the world, but remember not to forget about a bag. I clearly recall the perfect scenario. I, still working as editor in chief of Marie Claire, had a lovely new marketeer. Pretty, fun and talented. The only disadvantage: she was young. And sometimes older people have a bought time taking instructions from people younger than they are.

Anyways. Maureen, that was her name, and she would be introducing her new marketing plan to the ladies and gents high up on the ladder from Paris who were in the Netherlands for a day checking out our dependance. In the morning I had given them an insight into our number and had treated them to a lunch. But the afternoon, the afternoon was all for Maureen. As you can understand, she was un petit peu nervous. Presenting in front of the French is not something you do every week. What do I wear, May? Help me!

Now I have to say Maureen’s style was always spick and span, but a nice designer bag wouldn’t hurt her. Since 27 year old girls don’t have bank account full of cash to spend on pricey it-bags, I lent her my Tod’s bag. “Tod’s embodies class, has a business look yet it’s fashionable too. Lady Di wore it once too. Better yet, this one was named after her”, is what I told Maureen.

Doomsday had arrived. Maureen almost burst in two because of her nerves. Especially when she picked up our French friends at the reception and she could tell they had absolutely no idea who she was. She dropped them off at the boardroom, but her bag on a chair and walked off to grab her laptop. As she left the room, Maureen (who spoke quite a bit of French) heard the second in command ask the big boss: “Who is she?”. The big boss’ reaction: “I have no idea, but she must be somebody.” “How do you know?” “She’s wearing a Tod’s bag.”
