SLA is cool

You know it well; lettuce, tomato, avocado, mozzarella, and sometimes a pine nut. This is usually what the salad looks like when you make it at home. Grilled vegetables, quinoa, or lentils can quickly become too much work, or I just really have no inspiration after a long day at work.

Salad bar ‘SLA’ has not been open for long, but there is already a line outside every evening. By the way, it’s only girls. Maybe men are getting a bit crazy from all that healthy stuff these days and salad sounds a bit wimpy, but on the Ceintuurbaan they can also really get their avg-tje (potatoes, meat, vegetables). Well, potatoes are then replaced by, for example, spelt bulgur, whole grain couscous, or lima beans.

At SLA, you don’t have to resist sweet or fatty temptations, because you can only choose from salad, soup, freshly squeezed juices, and super healthy snacks. From the open kitchen (they call it the SLA lab), mainly organic products come. Soon, there will even be a greenhouse in the backyard where they will grow their own vegetables and herbs. Behind the salad bar are four fresh, fun girls who scoop exactly what you want into a bowl. You can even assemble your salad yourself or choose from five of their ‘favorites’. I chose the spicy falafel balls, whole grain couscous, roasted cauliflower, pumpkin, carrot, and pumpkin seeds (€7.00). And to make it even healthier and more nutritious, you can also choose a topping offor example, hemp and flax seeds. If you still feel like something sweet afterwards, there is for the real diehards a raw chocolate cake made from chia seeds and coconuts (€5.00).

You pick up cutlery yourself at a buffet, and there are jugs of water with mint to help yourself. Indeed, guys, that does sound a bit quaint, but if you feel like a beer or a glass of wine, that’s available too.

The decor of SLA is in a bright large space with simple wooden tables and folding chairs. On the wall, funny baskets hang with fresh herbs and other plants.

After my super healthy Eastern salad, I am definitely a fan of this place and very happy that it is on my route when I bike home, but still want to eat at home. Because takeout is also possible.
