5 reasons why buying a designer bag is a good idea

Here at the office, a number of Major Events have taken place over the past few weeks. Long waiting and many dreams was the process, a PS11 by Proenza Schouler for me and a Trio Bag by Céline from Josselin the result. Josselin hadn't told her friends that she bought Céline (“they wouldn't find it interesting anyway”) and when they saw on Amayzine that the purchase was indeed a fact, Joss got the question “why is this bag actually worth so much money?” Joss immediately shouted something about it being “of course an investment!” to which her friends bounced back: “but, an investment in what actually?” Good point, good point, but after I heard this story it was immediately clear to me that this needs to be written about directly because OF COURSE that bag is worth that money. And for the following reasons.

1. To begin with, it really is an investment.

The definition of an investment is “the allocation of money or the acquisition of production means to obtain a return.” You will feel that return because a Good Bag opens doors for you, like May once wrote. Investing in a bag might be investing in a new job, and a job earns money so: the bag is a good investment. Additionally, a Good Bag is a relatively inexpensive way to upgrade your entire wardrobe because a pair of H&M pants and a Zara sweater suddenly look a lot better with a Céline/Proenza/Chloé.

2. You will enjoy it for years.

That's also why it's an investment because a Good Bag is still a Good Bag in 10 years. The leather stays beautiful and will probably only get more beautiful, the hardware won't flake off, the zippers will keep working, the stitches will stay where they should be, and the color is never going anywhere. A Good Bag is expensive because of the brand that is on it, but also because of the insane quality. A super trendy bag from Zara is indeed very nice, but you quickly get fed up with those things and moreover, they start to look uglier and more worn out. Not cool.

“That watch that Mr. is wearing on his wrist is more expensive than all my GOOD BAGS combined”

3. He can also buy a watch, right?

Especially men will throw at your feet that the price of a Good Bag is totally insane. I once made the capital mistake of telling a man how much I paid for my Chloé Paraty. BIG mistake, so now that Proenza has been added, I keep him completely in the dark. But recently I finally thought of a way to explain to him why I can justify spending so much money on a bag for myself. Mr. has a Breitling on his wrist and those things don’t come cheap. In fact, that watch is more expensive than all my Good Bags combined. A watch is for a man what a Good Bag is for a woman: an investment piece, with a high price tag, that you use your whole life, and that you enjoy every day.

4. The moment of purchase alone is a whole event.

A Good Bag is bought in a Good Store and you get it in a Good Bag. Preferably. That store looks super slick, the staff is nice and friendly and treats you like you are the queen of Monaco and if you are really lucky, you even get a glass of bubbles with it. Afterwards, you go with the friend(s) who came along to drink wine hysterically to celebrate. Or you order it online of course, that works too. I ordered Proenza online and when The Big Box containing a slightly smaller box and inside a dustbag and inside PROENZA arrived, the hysteria was at least as great. Also important, document everything, then you can look back at it very often. 5. Because it simply makes you very, very happy..

And that is actually the most important reason. When my father asked at an unguarded moment how much I actually paid for Proenza, I said I wasn't going to tell him “because that's not what it's about. That bag makes me happy and just because of that, it is worth more than the money.” My father thankfully understands those kinds of things and said “very good child, I think so too” and that was that. You don't have to justify to anyone what you paid for it. If you don't have to support a family with 18 children and you earn your own money and can therefore spend it yourself, why on earth would you have to convince someone else that it’s not ridiculous to make such a purchase? It’s YOUR money, and you do with it what YOU want, and no one has a say in that. Buy the bag, keep the bag, LOVE the bag.
