9 FASCINATING FASHION FACTS
When people ask me whether and if so what the deeper layer of my fascination for fashion is, I tell them that I want to show people that fashion and beauty can help you move forward in life. Provided they are used well, of course. Because a false ID is a simple matter in fashion.
How wonderful it is when I encounter people like Karen Pine on my digital path. She is a professor of the psychology of fashion (what a lovely job) at Bilgi University in Istanbul (also nice). She conducted scientific research on how we dress, and the most amusing conclusions came from that. I collect the 9 most fun ones.
1. When a woman wears red, a man is more likely to approach her. Lady in red, remember? Know what to do when you a date have one. Or when you really want one.
2. If you wear black in court and you are the defendant, you will receive a heavier sentence than if you slide into the benches in innocent white or soft pink.
3. When women ovulate, they dress more provocatively. Reproducing is our most important task in life, so we apparently leave nothing to chance.
4. When women wear jeans, they are more likely to be depressed than happy.
5. If a female applicant dresses in a masculine way, she has a better chance of getting the job. So no charms in the fight and let a low neckline work for you. Wear a power suit (the white shirt with bow from Hedi Slimane for Saint Laurent seems like a great option), style it off with a sturdy heel (because women in heels earn more) and keep it businesslike.
6. If someone looks just like you, you are more likely to lend them money. A bit of a clever con artist will effortlessly adapt to your attire to win your trust.
7. If you dress like a manager, you will get promoted faster. If you also perform the rest of your work a bit according to need, that is.
8. If someone wears dated or outdated clothing, people will stand further away from that person.
9. The right clothing can make a person less depressed.
For the last finding, I didn't need scientific research. From my own fieldwork, I know perfectly well what a fresh pair of shoes can do for you. Or as my daughter (5) said this morning when I complained about the weather/school/hurry/traffic/general Tuesday malaise; “But mom, just put in a pair of earrings?”
