Beauty

Marjolein Leenarts is a dermatologist. Through her work, she knows everything, but really everything about good and not-so-good products for the skin. From there, she also has her own product line and the site dokterleenarts.nl is developing. Not just any line, but a line with finally the solution for dry legs and a nice bath lotion without coming out of the shower completely dehydrated. You understand, we are very happy that Marjolein wanted to share her beauty rituals and tips with us.

Morning ritual

“On the days I work in the hospital (Red Cross Center / Burn Center Beverwijk), I leave the house at 7:15 AM. The alarm goes off at 6:30 AM and in three quarters of an hour, I get dressed and help the children with that. So there are no extensive rituals. In the hospital, rings and nail polish are prohibited, so I often have to quickly remove the nail polish on Monday mornings. I actually wear eyeshadow, eyeliner, and mascara daily. The eyeshadow from Lancôme stays on the longest.”

What should you pay attention to when buying a beauty product?

“In my practice, I naturally see many people with contact allergies to ingredients such as fragrances or preservatives. For them, it is often a real hunt to check all the ingredients of a product to see if the specific allergens are not present. For people without sensitive skin, it is a lot simpler. Always buy a day cream with SPF, a sun protection factor.”

Eyebrows or lashes

“Definitely eyelashes! I always have mascara on, everywhere. Usually Volume Million Lashes from L’Oréal Paris. Of course in black.”

Unexpected beauty tool

“After the shower or bath, put a dab of Vaseline on your nails. The result is strong and shiny nails.”

Favorite perfume

“Lately, I am a big fan of Chloé. But to be honest, I still can't part with my very first perfume: White Musk Parfum Oil from the Body Shop. I've been using this since I was 15years old.”

“I still see and hear people putting conditioner all over their hair so often. Really a shame, because the hair becomes very limp and greasy. Conditioner should really only be applied to the ends for care and definitely not on the roots or throughout your hair. In the makeup world, people put bronzer or powder all over the face. Then you just become a pancake. So apply it really locally instead of all-over. I also find eyebrows very important. It’s better to have them done, unless you can do it very well yourself.”

“A cheaper cream doesn't always have to be of lower quality. As annoying as it is, a very expensive anti-wrinkle cream really doesn't give eternal youth. Not smoking, good genes, and little sun are the things that really matter.”

The SOS trick for a big pimple

“As a teenager, like everyone I think, I once slept with toothpaste on a pimple. In my memory, the pimple did get smaller. But has this ever been scientifically researched? I can certainly imagine that the pimple dries out from it. What you definitely shouldn't do is squeeze it. This pushes the sebum deeper into the skin, causing a larger inflammation.”

Nice beauty purchase

Uruku Bronzer from Aveda (Brazilian sun). Adds some color to my face on these cold winter days.”

Don't tell anyone... but

“Actually, I hardly apply any creams and beauty products. You would expect differently from a dermatologist. I am also not really brand loyal. At conferences, I often receive sample products from Eucerin, La Roche-Posay, Vichy, and I actually use whatever is in my drawer. This winter, I am very happy with theDry Skin ointment from my own line. Perfect for those dry, flaky lower legs.”
