She prefers to stay in the background, her work is viewed by at least a million people every day. Nadjesda Tolsma is, alongside Gwen van Waveren, the regular makeup artist for RTL Boulevard. Thanks to her tools and techniques, Albert, Winston, and the expert of the day look their best.
Morning ritual
“I shower every day, but I scrub every other day. I have a nice scrub from Sabon in the scent of vanilla/lavender. Additionally, I apply a body butter from The Bodyshop every day. It's nice and rich and has a wonderful scent on its own. Furthermore, I always use deodorant without parabens and such. As for facial creams, I switch a lot, but I'm always a fan of Biodermal. I once made a video for that brand and was in the laboratory then. Since I saw how that brand was developed and what ingredients are used, like milk and oatmeal, I’m sold. They have a very broad line that is very rich. In terms of makeup, I don't use much myself. Usually, I apply a powder from MAC Cosmetics, a mascara from Maybelline or Max Factor. Oh, and I always dye my eyebrows because otherwise, there's nothing there.”
Red carpet essential
“At a red carpet event, you have to go all out. You can't choose just lips or just eyes. You might be able to do a little makeup yourself, but the hair is especially very important. A hairstyle really needs to match the dress, so visit the hairdresser, because they can do it beautifully. It really needs to be a complete picture.”
Favorite brands
“I work with many different brands like MAC Cosmetics, Le Clerq, Kryolan, Criolan, and Joe Blasco. The latter has very nice base products, and the color and texture are also very special. Kryolan also has a very nice thinner that I use to make bases a bit thinner. Nowadays, almost everyone has HD-TV at home, and you can really see everything on it. So, you have to work very precisely because every little spot is visible. As a makeup artist, the tip is that not everything you use yourself looks good on camera. There is definitely a difference.”
Eyebrows or lashes
“I find both very important. Personally, if I don't do it, I immediately have a bare-bottom face. Eyebrows determine the expression of the face, and eyelashes make it less flat. I really think eyebrows and eyelashes are the minimum you should do to keep a face expressive.”
Favorite perfume
“In the past, Deep Red by Hugo Boss was my favorite, but now it's Infusion D’Iris by Prada. It's a completely different scent, and it has a bit of that soapy quality. I work closely with people, so it shouldn't be a very strong scent. Sometimes a body lotion or deodorant is enough to smell fresh all day.”
Undiscovered beauty product
“The Stimulash from Fusion is really a surprise for me. I often use it in the evening, the first few times very faithfully, now sometimes a few days in a row and then not again. You really get fuller and longer eyelashes from it.’
Never leave home without
“I don't leave the house without mascara or a scent. It can be body lotion or deodorant, as long as it has a scent. Usually, there's always a mascara in my bag, and it’s also everywhere in the house, but when I'm working, I don't necessarily need to carry everything with me.”
Her must-do
“I work a lot with Keune products, and my favorite product is the powder. You put a little on the hair roots, and it immediately makes your hair stiff and lifts the hair roots. You can create so much volume with it. It also works all day long. Throughout the day, you can run your fingers along your ears and touch it up again. Not from the outside, because then it will frizz.”
