Hyshil Sander worked for VOGUE and ELLE, was recently seen in DWDD and took care of the window displays of the stylish stores Anna + Nina and The American Book Center. In short: she knows about style. Which hotspots can withstand her approval?
Where do you like to eat out in Amsterdam?
‘I live in IJburg, there are quite nice dining options. I like to go to Restaurant MCHI (add link), where I order Asian small bites. Aan de Amstel I also find it a small low key restaurant. The food is fresh, not heavy, but luxurious. I love laid back luxury. Eating out in IJburg is also nice because you don't have to ask for attention from the staff as often. In the city, they are more arrogant and it's more crowded. Here in IJburg, there is more patience with the guest.
Where do you go for lunch?
‘Gartine in the Taksteeg, near the Spui. A small place, but there is always room. You order special small dishes, such as salmon tartlets, lentils, or mackerel cream. And all the vegetables come from their own garden. The desserts are also divine. I always have cheesecake with a poached pear.’
How do you relax in the city?
‘Then I prefer to go to a museum alone. The Stedelijk is the most fun and suits my taste, but in the Rijksmuseum, you can wander around alone for much longer.’
Does your daughter go to museums with you?
“Yes, but we usually go to Nemo or the Maritime Museum. The navigation instruments section is my favorite. It's dark there, and you see constellations on the ceiling and walls. So beautiful and magical.”
If you could go away for a weekend, where would you go?
“To Berlin. My husband is German, we also have many friends there. In the past, we always stayed in an apartment of acquaintances. The city is now growing and changing a lot, which I sometimes find a shame. In the past – but still – there was a raw and creative atmosphere. What I like about Berlin is that you can have a lovely breakfast everywhere. For just a few euros, you have a hotel breakfast in buffet form. The sushi is also very tasty and cheaper than in Amsterdam. At the Pony Club, you sit nicely on the street with a beer and a bite. But I always have a regular schnitzel once too.”
