OH STYLIST WHERE ART THOU’?
Lena Dunham in Giambatista Valli at the Emmys
Yesterday the Emmys were awarded in America. If you matter a bit in TV land, you had your stylist arrange a Dress. Not just any dress, no, a Dress. Maybe even a JURK. Preferably reaching to the floor, striking (red was the word this year and thanks to Heidi Klum it turned out ) orange indeed is the new black) and especially very glamorous.
When TV awards are handed out, Lena Dunham must be there. She has been nominated eight times after all. And even though Lena is an underground Williamsburg style girl, a red carpet brings out the urge to become a princess in every woman. Even in Lena.
Red carpet dress codes are the toughest there are. You have very few ingredients style-wise to create a good total look. An evening gown, a killer heel, and a statement clutch, you don’t have much more at your disposal. Now most actresses are blessed with a killer body so such minimal fashion artillery is no problem, but if you are, how do I say this nicely, a bit shorter and rounder and perhaps not blessed with what is generally considered stylish taste, then a little red carpet can be quite tricky.
Lena thought she hit the mark with her Giambattista Valli couture skirt that reached to the sole of a Louboutin and was also completely on-trend with an ombre coloring. A princess skirt. That was it. Yet it went wrong. Where did it go wrong? We start with the blouse. Dear Lena, a tip. Blouses and red carpets: not a good marriage. Remember that. Then your new haircut, which is quite fun in itself but just, well, not such a match with this outfit. Then the skirt. This skirt does a lot, unfortunately, undressing is not one of them. But dear Lena, you gave us Girls, you made us laugh, my oh my how you made us laugh, you taught us that you can also prance around naked just fine even if you might not have the Valli size and you brought us to the realization that intelligence gets you much further in life than looks alone.
We don’t care that this skirt was a miscast. And next time maybe just take a look at your colleague Allison Williams because she really got it right.
