PUCCI BY PETER DUNDAS
On Saturday, a select group ascends the stairs to the baroque space on Corso Venezia where Peter Dundas showcases his interpretation of Pucci. Hairstylist Rachel Geerman from The Building Amsterdam is where the backstage action happens, so here too. A report.
Peter Dundas has been at the helm of Pucci for five years now and wow, he has, excusez, somewhat revived the somewhat sleepy house into one of the hottest labels in town. The most beautiful girls are booked (Joan Smalls, Sasha Luss, Malaika Firth, Fei Fei Sun, Lindsey Wixson, Irina Kravchenko, and our own Maartje Verhoef) and of course hair guru Luigi Murenu who always books Rachel.
While Dundas spent the first five years primarily breathing new life into Pucci's iconic past, he now dared to weave his own Norwegian background into the history of the Italian house. And oh la la, it became a delightful north-south marriage with Scandinavian prints and woolen dresses but at a Pucci length. Lots of long fur coats and beautifully elegant suits with deep necklines. Pucci and Peter, that’s a delightful combination.
To conclude, a small personal anecdote.
Some time ago, Doutzen shone on the cover of Marie Claire. I had been working on it for a long time and was proud to have her (in a Pucci dress) on our cover. The shoot was just before the Prix de la Mode and, as often happens, I had nothing, NOTHING, NOTHING to wear on the day itself. “Why don't you try the Pucci dress?” suggested fashion director Simone. “It's stretchy and it fit Doutzen quite loosely, so who knows.” After I choked on my latte, I dared to make the trek to the fashion room. Very aware of the humiliation that awaited me if I had to walk back to the editorial team (“And? And?!”) in a torn dress. But hey, the dress fit and I had an outfit for the party. Coincidentally, the same issue where Doutzen graced the cover also featured a report on the Prix where I wore The Dress. Of course, I sent the issue to Peter Dundas, who returned it with a handwritten note. In his beautiful, artistic but almost illegible handwriting, I read, “Thanks for the cover and for wearing my dress. You both looked fat.” I was shocked for a moment. This couldn't be true. I showed the note to others. It said ‘fab’ and not ‘fat’. Pffffff…..
