How to be Vogue, JAN, or ELLE

I was away for two weeks for the filming of Holland’s Next Top Model, with fashion photographer Dirk Kikstra and top model turned presenter Anouk Smulders. Naturally talk turned to ’the business’. We ended up shrieking with laughter during our flight, at how every magazine has its own attitude and quirks.

Take a look, find yourself in it, and if you practice enough you can use the poses to create your own fashionable Instagram. Here we go.

So Marie Claire

Marie Claire has a slogan – think smart, look amazing. Marie Claire shows a woman going places, having a goal but also keeping the fun in her life, through a series of fashion images. Archetypical pose; the female taking a jolly jump forwards.

Totally Elle

Elle is big city and takes fashion very seriously. An Elle woman is not easily impressed so a full designer spread is shown in a nonchalant and cool manner. Archetypical pose is arm casually draped over the head, head cocked a little to the side, body arched and most importantly, stare casually at the camera.

This is Vogue

Vogue is the style bible of course. Although it seems that a more cheerful nod to fashion is possible. Archetypical Vogue pose: Legs crossed over each other, arms to the side, shoulder forward so the body makes a V-shape. A cute pouty lip is obviously allowed.

Typical Jan

JAN is fun, always having a good time and a little different. If you want to take a real JAN photo then draw a moustache on your finger and hold it on your face. Preferably in a boyfriend-type outfit. You could end up at a neighborhood party like this.
