Smart dining out

I always get a bit the creeps from people who prefer not to eat out because they have to watch their weight or are “on a diet”. You can much better eat out than being invited to someone's home, you know. In a restaurant, you have the reins in your own hands.

I can imagine that you always get a bit nervous about the December month because there are many dinners in the agenda, year-end dinners, and all sorts of restaurant appointments. No panic. I’ll help you make a smart choice and not worry about anything.

Of course, you can do a bit of research in advance and check the menu online. I’m actually more in favor of feeling what you want at the moment (when you’re in a restaurant) and not taking what you’ve already chosen beforehand, because then you eat with your head and eating with your feelings is much more fun. But a little reading up can’t hurt, of course.

Keep in mind that it’s not a shame to just tell the waiter what you feel like. If you don’t want fries, then don’t. Do you want olive oil instead of butter? Then ask for it. Nothing is more annoying than leaving the place and feeling a bit guilty about what you ate. So say what you want. I once did some research on what men find annoying during dating and that was the difficult orders from women. Nothing, nothing, but absolutely nothing to worry about.

 What are we eating?

Fish is a light meal, as long as it’s grilled or steamed, of course. A small steak from the grill is also very skinny-proof or what do you think of a steak tartare? My favorite.

On it or next to it?

I always ask for sauce on the side. Sauce can sometimes be a fattening agent (sorry, I really hate that word), but the reason I find is mainly because you don’t know if I like that sauce and it’s such a waste if it’s already splattered all over your dish. I do that with salads too. Always the dressing on the side so you can dose it yourself.

 What are we drinking?

A glass of wine with dinner is lovely and can really be done. Just try to drink in moderation and also drink enough water in between. It’s a matter of discipline. But getting up with a fresh head is nice!

 And something on the side?

Sometimes you get fries with your dish without it being on the menu. Delicious, of course, but you can also inquire in advance what the side dish is. Then choose vegetables instead of fries. Or maybe they have a nice salad.

 The dessert

Who says that you have to skip the dessert? No way. If I see a sticky toffee cake on the menu, I can’t resist it. What I always try to do is share it with someone. I let my dining companion order the dessert and I eat a few bites for the company. Nothing wrong with that.
