5 GALA-RULES YOU NEED TO KNOW
My phone rang on Sunday. Unknown number so answering was not an option. On Monday, ‘the big unknown’ called me again. And left a message. It was Floortje Dessing. In a soft state of panic. What was the case? Floortje is nominated for the Silver Star at the Golden Televizier Ring Gala and then the question arises: what should I wear? For heaven's sake.
“Of course I'm way too late with this, but I was in Mauritius yesterday and suddenly realized that I still need to wear something. And you know about this, May-Britt.”
Floortje and I know each other from a distant television past and Floortje has been working with one of my best friends Hanneke for about fifteen years. Hence the connection. And Hanneke and Floortje make that beautiful Floortje go to the other side of the world, which I am secretly bizarrely proud of. But that aside. Back to the dress. Or rather: the absence of the dress.
It is the question that is buzzing through television land this week. Do you have a dress and if so, what are you wearing? The Avro dictates black tie for this party and that causes great unrest every year. Therefore, here are the what to wear and what not to wear to the gala.
1. Long is not necessary
This is a black tie event. You can certainly wear long, but cocktail (so knee-length) is also fine. So no raised finger if I trip down the carpet tomorrow in my stylish Claesje. That's allowed. And the dress is a picture.
2. Watch stays at home
At a gala, time plays no role. You are having fun and do not let earthly matters like time disrupt your state of being. ‘Clock in the safe’, Martin Morero would say.
3. Jewelry
The more, the better. And gloves are always a good asset. Just remember that you wear the rings under your gloves (over them is only allowed for Sinterklaas), but your bracelets can go over the gloves.
4. Finish it off
No chewed-up heels under a beautiful dress. Don't think that people won't see it, because they will. So invest in a good shoe and bring a bag that is preferably so small that your phone barely fits in it.
5. And a quick wash
Your dress can be beautiful, but if your hair looks like you've been hanging out in the deep fryer, it won't help you. Book a blow-dry at the hairdresser and ask if they can maybe put some nice lashes on you. Apply a nice oil to your legs (preferably this one) and don't forget your arms and décolletage either.
Finally, choose a nice perfume and make sure you don't forget your deodorant before you leave...
