6 free things that will spice up your outfit
You don't necessarily have to buy a new outfit to strut into the office with vavavoom. It's just a matter of looking at what you have with fresh eyes and sometimes literally turning your clothes upside down. Just watch, because with these tips you'll conjure up a fresh look from your high hat.
Just as it was, and actually still is, very much ‘in’ to hide your hair halfway in your scarf/jacket/sweater, it is now incredibly trendy to tuck your sweater (or blouse or whatever) halfway into your pants. At the front that is, and you let the back hang out nicely.
So incredibly the attire of fashion people, but it gives you instant power. A jacket over your shoulder simply means that a. you are never cold (earthly matters like cold don't matter in your life, because you hop from car with driver to meeting to hotel lobby), b. you don't have to do any physical work (have you ever tried to lift two Albert Heijn bags with a jacket hanging over your shoulders? You can't do it, believe me) and c. it gives you a very slim silhouette.
Do like Diana Vreeland and wear your vests backwards. It looks nice and modest at the front and provides a bit of surprise when you walk away.
When I left Marie Claire, my fellow editors gave me a Chanel scarf. Beautiful, but I didn't quite know what to do with it. Tying it around my head felt a bit awkward. Until Peggy tipped me off and said she used her Hermès scarves as a belt. Ripped jeans, a white blouse on top, heels underneath, and a beautiful scarf as a belt. The look of the day, you'll win that, bet?
Grab a scarf and a bag. Hang the scarf on the handle, tie a knot in it and voilà; a new bag is born. At least, a new version. Bet you'll get compliments?
If you're not wearing your vest backwards, it's nice to wear it over a dress and only button the top button. It's especially nice if you can see a little bit of skin before your dress or sweater starts. Exciting.
Madeleine Albright wore a different one every day. That goes a bit far, because a nice brooch is quite pricey. Still, a piece of jewelry on a jacket is really an extra. Simone Dernee (fashion director Marie Claire) always wore a huge scorpion that received many compliments) and I'm very happy with my camellia from Chanel and my Sonia Rykiel. It shows that you've paid attention to your look and you give your clothes your own interpretation. Danie often uses multiple brooches to spice up a jacket. You see, styling doesn't have to be expensive.
