Janelle Chaplin is Global Creative Director of O&M. O&M is a really cool brand when it comes to hair products. It not only has the finest products but also creates incredibly cool looks. That's why Jet, Lies, May, and I naturally had to visit the salon in New York, and of course, I asked Janelle some beauty questions. Because we all want good hair.

Morning ritual

“I always start the morning with a cup of hot water and a splash of lemon. I wash my hair three times a week with O&M's three-step plan for ideal hydration. You need three products for that. The first does a sort of detox for your hair. It doesn't wash it yet, but it does restore the base. The second is a shampoo, depending on your hair type, and the third is a conditioner to close everything up again. On the other days when I don't wash my hair, I use dry shampoo from O&M. My hair looks great with that too. I cleanse my face every morning. Besides that, my morning time goes to makeup.”

5 minutes make-up

“When it comes to makeup, I'm really a girly girl. I set aside about 25 minutes for it. I always use a tinted moisturizer with SPF 15. For the evenings, it can be a thicker foundation without SPF. I always use a lipstick from M.A.C Cosmetics, eyeshadow from Chanel, and the Master Graphic Liner from Maybelline New York. That's really the best I've ever used. Right now, I'm wearing fake lashes, so I don't have to do anything to my eyelashes, but otherwise, the Dior Show mascara is my favorite.’

Nails

“My nails are currently done in a pointed shape. I think that's really cool. Normally, my nails are always short, but I like this for a change. They are also painted dark. Dark polishes are actually always my favorite, including the dark blue color from CHANEL. When they start to chip, dark nail polish is the easiest to touch up. With nude shades, it's not, and on top of that, nude is so difficult to apply nicely.”

Eyebrows or lashes

“Definitely the brow. It gives shape and expertise to your face. I have colored them with O&M, which I think gives a nice and characterizing effect.”

Hair trend

“You see a lot of different trends now that I all find cool. But my favorite is the very very undone hair. That's really big. And the wet look. And also the ponytail. And boyish hair. Actually, you see them all a lot; they are cool.”

Beauty icon

“Very classic women with a particularly beautiful style for me are Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. They have an amazing presence and classic beauty. Right now, I also find Kendall Jenner an icon. You can tell that the nineties are coming back; she is really the new Naomi.”

Hair secrets

“If you use products in your hair like mousse, twist your hair a bit. So take a strand and wrap it around your finger. The product is then distributed much better over your hair and can therefore do its job better and more beautifully. Also, use products as much as possible on dry hair, then you get the most beautiful and best effect. Oh, and do you have, or make, curls? Brush them out. Nothing is uglier than uncombed curls.”

Touch-up

“Many women have a busy schedule. So I understand that they don't have much time for a touch-up. I always have a soft brush and texture spray in my bag for that. Head upside down, a bit of spray in, brush it out, and it's perfect again. The volume and texture are back instead of a flattened hairstyle.”

Best hair purchase?

“Surf Bomb. That's a Sea Salt Texture Spray. That's really the best.”
