AND THEN I SUDDENLY HAD KIM KARDASHIAN ON THE PHONE...

No, this is not a misleading headline with random words ‘Kim Kardashian’ to make you click (would be funny though). Last year, I really had Kim Kardashian on the phone. When I was asked to interview the queen of selfies for work, my heart skipped a beat, you understand.

And while it wasn't actually the intention for me to speak to her... It started like this: Khloé Kardashian was coming to the Netherlands to promote a new clothing line that the sisters had designed. And I would be able to chat with her about it. Not face-to-face of course, no, the busy Kardashians have no time for that. A few days before her visit to picturesque Netherlands, she would call me. At a quarter past five in the freaking morning, mind you (time difference in America, thank you very much).

“Not face-to-face of course, no, the busy Kardashians have no time for that...”

Whether I would mind setting my alarm so early was the question from their PR agent. Of course not. I thought very differently about that in the morning, as I had set my alarm an hour earlier due to panicked preparation reasons. But after a good cup of coffee, I was ready to go. In my email, I check one last time the arrangements made regarding the interview and I suddenly see something new come in from the corner of my eye. ’Besides Khloé, Kim and Kourtney are also available to speak with you.‘ I run like an idiot to the coffee machine for a new pot.

At ten past five, I have everything ready: voice recorder, extra voice recorder, phone, extra phone, and notepad. When it's time, it stays silent. The longest quarter of an hour of my life begins, and then the phone rings. ‘Hi Kiki, this is Kim. How are you?’ I chuckle at the thought that Kim Kardashian she pronounces my name, then realize that's not very professional and start the interview.

“Besides Khloé, Kim and Kourtney are also available to speak with you.”

I speak with Kim, Khloé, and Kourtney and ask them for ten minutes about their clothing line, favorite designers, female curves, and the increasingly thinner models on the catwalk. Oh, and how they deal with the many criticisms they receive and whether they really have bitch fights often or if that only happens on TV. And no, those arguments are real, they let me know. We chat a bit more about the pressure from the media and the pressure they feel daily to always look perfect.

At a quarter to six, I stare at my scribbled notepad. So this is what it's like to speak to the Kardashians, I think. Where so many people criticize these ladies and their way of ‘being famous for being famous’, they are actually just people too. And honestly: I have a cool story for the Christmas party.
