She has been a hair and makeup artist for magazines, Fashion Week, and television for 25 years, but she is certainly not old and worn out. Carmen Zomers, that is the makeup artist I am talking about, still looks incredibly beautiful herself. Quite impressive, as she gets up every morning at half past four to make the presenters of WNL look good. Furthermore, she ‘does’ Elle van Rijn, Nadja Hüpscher and Dyanne, she has her own agency and is the head of the cabin for, among others, the Modefabriek. Well Carmen, take it away and tell us your secrets.
Morning ritual
“Even though I look quite natural, my hair always has to be well-groomed. I always blow-dry my hair and curl it with a large or medium curling iron from CHI. Furthermore, I always use a silk therapy for shine and protection against the curling iron. My morning ritual is mainly quick and simple.
I often start working very early, around half past four, and every minute of sleep counts. By the way, that is also an extra beauty secret, because getting enough sleep is really very important. Furthermore, I always brush my teeth, use a little concealer and creamy eyeshadow. They are easy to apply with your fingers. I also always have a bit of blush on the apples of my cheeks, as it looks nice and fresh. What I never skip is a pedicure. I find it so unkempt to have winter feet in slippers. That really isn't acceptable for men either.”
Red carpet essential
“In daily life, I really love shiny, but in photos, it always looks less good when the forehead, chin, and nose shine. The secret for red carpet is therefore to powder.”
Favorite brands
“I am the official makeup artist of Yves Rocher. It is a beautiful brand with natural products. The pigments of the eyeshadows are amazing, and with the satin-soft (Zero Defaut), I can work beautifully. The makeup artists from my agency that I represent are also fans and love to work with this brand. Yves Rocher is very progressive. That appeals to me a lot, and that is also the reason I started working with Yves Rocher.”
Eyebrows or lashes
“I really can't choose between them. Both eyebrows and eyelashes are so defining for a face. The first thing I do is check someone's eyebrows and possibly tweeze them with a Tweezerman. Then I fill them in with a pencil. I always do this with a matte color without red. I have short, straight eyelashes myself and am always looking for a lash miracle. Now I alternate lash extensions with Revitalash, a miracle product that really makes your lashes mega long. Furthermore, I sometimes do a lash perm, which keeps your lashes beautifully curled for three weeks. Ideal for vacation. I also always use my eyelash curler. My favorite at the moment is the eyelash curler from Tweezerman. You can heat it with a hairdryer or hot water, and it really gives the perfect curl.”
Million Dollar Tip
“Keep it simple. I don't like complicated and heavy makeup. People often ask me what beauty rules there are, but for me, there are no rules. I personally love fresh and beautiful, like how you look on a perfect day. But of course, with perfect hair.”
Inspiration
“I draw my inspiration from traveling and always come back with new ideas and products. Recently, I was in Shoreditch in London with one of my sons. I then buy all the magazines, the latest products available, and visit all the beauty stores. Alternating, of course, with the skate stores for my son. This way, we spend days searching for the latest trends, looks, and inspiration.”
Undiscovered beauty product
“I go for handy and something that does what it says. I really love beautiful, well-groomed hands and nails. The nail remover pen from Yves Rocher is so nice because it allows you to easily and conveniently remove excess nail polish from your fingers. Also new is a very handy device for doing a French manicure.”
Never leave home without
“That is a tweezer, for witch hairs that suddenly become very long. And for traveling, I always use my CHI curling iron.”
Her must-do
“I find the volumizing powder from CHI an amazing product. This miracle product really creates volume. Also, the CHI hairspray natural hold is indispensable for me. You can create a very nice boho wave with this.”
Trend
“I love the seventies look. I am a huge fan of the effortless look of hair, perfect skin, and kohl and kajal in all colors. The no-makeup look with ‘out of the water hair’ is of course also nice. Oh, and this season, lots of lashes and lots of mascara are in, which is super nice.”
