Karen Schreuder is not the least makeup artist with whom May-Britt was allowed to take a seat for the TV program Today. Karen has already made many people beautiful who just rolled out of bed to appear on television. In addition, she works for many different magazines. But first, she shares with us her tips and tricks that we can all learn from.
Morning ritual
“My morning ritual always starts with gluten-free oatmeal with water instead of milk, raw almonds, raisins, various types of seeds such as chia, hemp, and flaxseed, and red fruit. Furthermore, I always use my favorite day/night cream after showering; the Time Stop from Bergman Cosmetics or the rose cream from Dr. Hauschka for my face. Both are nice and thick, ensure that your skin does not feel tight, and are also perfect for dry skin. Additionally, I always use the rose oil from Weleda after showering, my flowing life elixir, my only hardcore addiction! A bottle every month, that scent is divine. I sometimes even use it on my face and for my hair. For my rather frizzy curly hair, I swear by all products made from Moroccan Oil argan oil. I wash my hair twice a week, not too often because it gets too dry otherwise. Then I apply the hair mask and the oil, both also from Moroccan Oil, at the same time. Shiny soft hair guaranteed.”
5 minutes make-up
“A cream blush from M.A.C I use on my cheeks, lips, and eyes. I remain loyal to this product. It blends beautifully, especially with a nice BB cream or the Body & Face foundation from M.A.C underneath. Furthermore, I always use the Royall Effem Volume mascara. That is the only mascara that really does not irritate sensitive eyes, but is still beautifully full. Royall Effem is an Italian, not very commercial, brand that exclusively works with natural ingredients, raw materials, oils, and vitamins. Specially developed for hyperallergenic skin and everything is paraben-free and not tested on animals. Furthermore, I apply some Eight Hour Cream (Elizabeth Arden) on my lips or the totally gloss lipstick from Royal Effem. This lipstick is a lip care product with a nice soft color pigmentation.”
Make-up mind
“I always see beauty in everyone. If someone has sparkling eyes or a beautiful mouth, I especially enhance that. Everything must blend in the face, so I look at the face and then create beautiful strong or soft eyes and I create beautiful creamy buttery soft skin. Furthermore, I try to enhance someone's features in the face by applying light play and shadow accents. I always try to make someone's most beautiful version, but in such a way that they still recognize themselves.”
Eyebrows or lashes
“Eyebrows are enormously defining for the face. I really love a beautiful, slightly upward combed full eyebrow. An eyebrow whose end points downwards gives an optional very tired look. I mainly follow the eyebrow bone. Usually, I use the powder-gel based eyebrow kit from Chanel. This kit consists of 3 shades; a light skin tone, a taupe-gray, and a black shade. This way you always get the right color. This gives the most natural effect. A well-drawn eyebrow can make you look seriously 10 years younger. I am quite a real eyebrow freak.”
Favorite perfume
“My favorite perfume is Chloé. The scent of honey, roses, cedar, and amber together I find so fresh and feminine. I still have people asking me which perfume I wear when I use Chloé. It is also the only scent that never bores me. This also applies to the Orange Bodyspray from Biotherm that I mainly use in the summer. That scent of orange and citrus is almost nostalgic, it makes me very happy. Although the rose bodyspray from The Body Shop has been doing very well lately. I particularly like the bodysprays because they are very fresh and stay a bit in the background. I quickly get nauseous from perfume, I find everything smells too overpowering quickly.”
Trend
“Beautiful unpowdered shiny skin, eyeliner wings, and smoky eyes with matte or metallic shimmer eyeshadow are incredibly beautiful trends at the moment. However, you have to be careful with metallics when you have a somewhat older skin and lines around your eyes. Shine and glitter accentuate those very much. Choose a nice matte complexion, for example, a nice taupe color, which you apply on a somewhat drooping eyelid. This creates depth and thus a more open and awake eye.”
Best purchase
“One of the best purchases I have made lately is the Pro Longwear Concealer from M.A.C Cosmetics. This is nice for under your eyes or to lighten dark spots. It melts invisibly into your skin and gives just a bit more coverage than, for example, the Touche Éclat from Yves Saint Laurent. And yes, the lipsticks from Ellis Faas. They are so beautifully pigmented. They are like candy!
Never leave home without
“Still the old trusted tube Eight Hour Cream from Elizabeth Arden, for my lips and hands, face, eyebrows, and nails. For everything actually.”
Million Dollar Tip
“Apply some Bright Eyes eye serum from Bergman Clinics before going to sleep. Especially after a wild night, it is really magic the next morning. It tackles swelling and bags under the eyes and works as a kind of 911-rescue lift. A miracle product. I work a lot at night for a morning program on television and this product is truly indispensable for me if I want to look respectable for the rest of the day. Don't forget a good primer! The one from M.A.C is really super. It hydrates the skin, makes it smooth and even, and ensures that your makeup stays in place all day long.”
Biggest style icon
“After the exhibition at the Kunsthal in Rotterdam two years ago, I became enormously in love with the style of Jean Paul Gaultier in terms of clothing and color, with all the details of indigenous peoples. He knows like no other how to combine and weave the influence of world cultures, from Mongolians and Chinese to the surrealist painter Frida Kahlo into his art. Genius, and in makeup and technique, that works very inspiring for me. I find it very cool that there will be an exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris this year about Jean Paul Gaultier. So for everyone who wants to be inspired; go see it! As a beauty icon, I absolutely find makeup artist Ellis Faas worthy of that title. And still secretly Serge Lutens. He is over 70 and both as a photographer and makeup artist still makes my heart skip a beat.”
