Sabrina Meijer types away on the most fun posts on her site afterDRK, makes quite a few fun trips for that site and knows how to look good on top of all that. Her style; ‘simplicity with an edge‘. And as an example the French ladies Sabrina always manages to adopt a refined and fresh beauty style. And she will tell you all about it now.
You travel all over the world. Plane in, plane out. So you’ve probably become quite good at packing your toiletry bag. What are the essentials and why?
“That sounds very jetset, right?! But it’s actually not that bad. I have indeed become quite skilled at packing my toiletry bag and I take very little with me on trips, also because I often travel with only hand luggage (those liquids weigh quite a bit). What always goes with me is a concealer from & Other Stories, the Cheek & Lip Tint in Kick Pleat Red from & Other Stories, eyebrow gel from M.A.C Cosmetics, mascara from always a random brand but currently I have the one from Dior Show, a moisturizer/multifunctional cream (which I currently have a small tube of), makeup remover (currently that’s Biodermal micellar water for sensitive skin), a lip balm (always random, but I really like the one from Hurraw! very nice) and of course a toothbrush and toothpaste. Sometimes I don’t even take a brush with me, but usually my mini Mason Pearson goes along. For a sunny destination, a mini bottle of sunscreen and as for shampoo and shower gel, I generally assume it’s available in the hotel.”
How would you describe your philosophy about beauty and makeup? Is it very important to you in your life? Why or why not?
“Actually, I’m quite a simple person when it comes to beauty and makeup. I love natural, although I can appreciate a lip every now and then. You wouldn’t see me quickly leaving the house with heavily made-up eyes, and I’d rather not use mascara than skip my eyebrow gel. At least once a week, I go out with a bare face to be able to ‘breathe’. Furthermore, I’m quite loyal to products and don’t often change my favorites, unless I receive something from a PR agency that turns out to be fantastic after trying it once. I love natural products and am slowly trying to replace the things I use up with (almost) natural-based products. Although that’s often a bit of a search, because natural products are not always as nice or effective as the ‘junk’ I normally put on my face.”
What is your beauty secret during the tropical temperatures of these days? How do you ensure that the foundation doesn’t drip off your face or that your head is not covered in sweat droplets?
“I almost never use foundation anyway, much prefer a BB cream, for example VitaZing from Origins. But on real sweaty days, I usually stick to eyebrow gel and some blush and tie my hair up. I usually forget that, but I also find the rose water spray from Sisley very nice. A good tip is to always have it in the fridge, so it’s extra cold, but then you have to remember to put the spray in your bag in the morning.‘
What are your favorite products that always stand on your bathroom shelf? And what are your favorite products that you don’t always use, but that give you an ultimate moment of luxury?
“I’m a huge fan of Goe Oil from Jao Brand. It’s a kind of multifunctional product (completely natural) and I apply it to almost all spots that feel a bit dry. For example, just a tiny bit on my hair ends. The Goe Oil smells like old men and that sounds gross, but it’s wonderful! Additionally, I’m a huge fan of the Living Luminizer from RMS, which gives the most beautiful glow on earth. And what I don’t always use, but gives me an ultimate moment of luxury is a good scrub (like Frank or the one from & Other Stories). Moroccanoil for my hair ends or Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair.”
Who is your biggest, most inspiring and influential beauty style icon?
“I don’t really have a beauty style icon, but I love those cool Parisian women who literally do nothing in terms of makeup (or at least have made an effort to make it look like they haven’t used anything) and look enviably beautiful and pure. Examples are Charlotte Gainsbourg, Marine Vacth, Clémence Poésy, and Jeanne Damas.”
Million dollar tip?
“This is mega cheesy, but keep it simple. Literally everyone – including Kim Kardashian, just look at the Spanish Vogue, looks their best in the most natural way.”
