Why is everyone doing this all of a sudden?
Let me share an anecdote from the old days. When I was still the editor-in-chief of RTL Boulevard, one of the last achievements was that executive producer Marijke Bongaarts and I lured Bram Moszkowicz in as a crime expert.
Bram, you should know, was then still the king of the courtroom and I believe I have never been served so well as that evening when Marijke and I discussed the contract with Bram in a restaurant in Laren. Bram was charming, smoked, drank, and was, in short, perfect company. Except for one small thing… His décolletage. Bram might have had the bottom two buttons of his shirt done up, the rest flared open like Galliano did on the Dior catwalk after he had spent three months in the gym.
Even during the broadcasts, it was a tricky task to ask Bram if he could please do one, or if he was already at it, two buttons up. A low décolletage was the thing, even for men. Maybe not as extreme as our Bram, but still quite a bit.
And where is Bram Moszkowicz when you need him?
After the low-buttoned shirt came the V-neck T-shirt. Sometimes I found it a bit too gay when a man flaunted his gym chest, but hey, it was pleasant in itself. But suddenly everything is different. Wherever I look, I see people, and especially men, with a shirt buttoned up to the top button.
At first, I thought it was a gay thing; such a nicely styled preppy look. But now I also see women and straight men with the button done up to the top. In love, war, and fashion, everything may be permissible, but I start to feel short of breath just looking at it.
Can we quickly trade this trend for another? And where is Bram Moszkowicz when you need him?
