If you turn on the TV, you will definitely see commercials where Q10 is being touted. Now I asked my closest nice colleagues if they actually knew what Q10 was. And then one of our interns said she always applies it because it must be good if it's mentioned so often. When I asked her what it was, she actually had no idea. A little topic Doctor Josselin was thus born. Q10.

What is Q10?

Actually, Q10 is an abbreviation for Coenzyme Q10 and you often see it in the overflowing list of ingredients as ubiquinone. It is an organic ingredient that naturally occurs in plants, animals, and humans. Everyone produces it themselves, but a little help from a product can’t hurt, as it only boosts it further.

Why Q10?

Q10 is often put in a cream because it is a very good antioxidant to add to the product. In skincare products, they prevent all external substances from having a bad influence on your skin. Those bad influences,
sun, air and makeup actually cause skin aging. That’s why antioxidants are so important; because they help prevent wrinkles, for example. And you probably recognize that, because Q10 is often mentioned in the same breath as wrinkles. Q10 thus plays a big role in the metabolism of cells. They ensure that cells are sufficiently nourished, allowing the cells to gain new energy. With new energy, you get a healthier and fresher appearance so do the math.

The research

Although your body basically produces enough Q10, there are plenty of creams with this substance. A study from 1999 showed that the use of CoQ10 really helps. If you apply the product faithfully and it contains a good percentage, it can really reduce crow's feet around the eyes in the long term. This is because it helps against UVA damage from the sun. That damage, causes wrinkles. So the circle is complete again.

Applying when you are young

If you start applying Q10 at a young age (Vera, are you reading along?), that doesn’t mean that you will go through life wrinkle-free. Just applying Q10 is of course not enough. To avoid getting wrinkles, you also have to follow some other rules. Although every little bit helps, so it really can’t hurt, and you can also faithfully apply the ingredient as a young flower. Q10 doesn’t have to be just for older people, although it does help to give a bit of a boost to the cells in a slightly ‘riper’ skin, allowing you to see results faster.
