DON'T BE ALARMED

Your handbag might be just as dirty as the toilet

We laughingly pay two months' salary for a designer bag, calmly reserve a separate airplane seat for our it-bag-baby (don't believe it? Just look here for a moment) and shamelessly ask the waiter for a linen napkin to place our bag on, but other than that… We treat our arm candy scandalously poorly.

In England, they (this was in this case by Initial Washroom Hygiene and Goodmorning Britain) examined 1000 bags from just as many women and came to the most shocking conclusion that 150 bags can be considered unhygienic, 500 bags fall into the ‘concerning’ category, and 150 bags are just as dirty as an average toilet seat.

Because I once promised to be honest with you, I am now going to empty my bag. The findings:

– A Chanel wallet

– Backstage pass from Rag & Bone

– A ticket from L.A., issued by my hotel there. Oops, that was three months ago…

– A Chanel tester that has been in there for a long time. An exclusive one, namely the scent Sycomore.

– A plaster cupcake made by my daughter and given to me as an ‘amulet’ or at least something that brings me luck and reminds me of her.

– My passport

– Keychain

– Invite for the Tommy Hilfiger show

– Business card from someone at the Chanel store on Robertson Boulevard in L.A.

– Chanel lip gloss

– Mints from New York (which are really very disgusting so will probably stay in my bag for now)

– A tampon (you can only need one…)

– Some receipts

– A voucher from Tenue de Nîmes (yay, I almost forgot about that)

– Scent pendant from Diptyque in the scent 34

I must honestly say that it’s not too bad. Although the number of items doesn’t really say anything about the state of pollution of my bag, I can deduce how long it has been since I completely emptied my bag. And thus also haven’t cleaned it.

Furthermore, we treat our arm candy scandalously poorly!

Shall we all clean our bags on the couch tonight and play incredibly Martha Stewart? This is how you can clean it.

– Wipe it clean with fragrance- and alcohol-free baby wipes.

– At Tod’s, they preach Nivea milk facial cleanser. Put that on a cotton pad and wipe it over your bag. This of course does not apply to suede.

– A fanatic YouTuber is a big fan of Cockpit spray. But only on synthetic materials, for leather and suede, you leave that spray at home.

– The girls in the Michael Kors store recommend silver polishing cloths for the metal parts.

– And if you’re too lazy, you can also take your bag to a special bag cleaner. But that will cost you €45… Up to you…
