FIRST AID WHEN YOU'RE SICK

in the last week of December (help!)

This morning I woke up feeling like I had swallowed a razor blade. Now that's already super annoying, but if you feel that way every time around Christmas/the New Year, you want to cry, believe me. Can I please just complain for a moment?

But luckily I seem to not be the only one. All around me, I hear people complaining who are sick, weak, and nauseous. It's actually intensely freaky: our bodies seem to almost feel that the end of the year is approaching and want to spread as many germs as possible in 2015. Last year, I also didn't feel great in the last week of December. On Christmas Eve, I caught a little virus/nearly died experience/food poisoning at my boyfriend's grandfather's place. Strangely enough, no one else seemed to be affected by it. But I might have been the only one who ate so much of that fish dish. Since then, I've been afraid of eel and herring. The whole Christmas I lay in bed like a pile of misery, complete with a bucket and a mountain of paracetamol next to me.

Anyway, this year was supposed to be completely different. I was definitely not going to get sick. But no, what a misery... The germs turn out to be stronger than my thoughts, and so here I am typing this with a runny nose and a thick scarf. What to do when you're sick during the holidays? By now, I’m almost becoming an expert, so here’s a list of tips to get through the snotty days:

1

Take it from the bright side: you suddenly have a really good excuse why you can't go to that annoying uncle's December party. How unfortunate!

2

Lock yourself up with some deliciously bad Christmas movies, macarons, and a thick blanket. Being sick suddenly isn't such a punishment anymore.

3

Tip from Jet: take a thousand milligrams of paracetamol suppository. “Okay, it’s a bit rough, but in it goes and believe me: afterwards you’ll really feel better.”

4

Accept your fate. Very annoying, but really the best tip there is. Take your time and enjoy being sick.

5

Also worth trying: ignore everything and go all out on the drinks. I’m going to do that tonight too. Good luck! ;-)
