Once we could enjoy a perfectly dressed Sacha on the screen every evening, but nowadays she is mostly behind the camera and we have to miss her just a little too much. Fortunately, she still shares her guilty pleasures and her love for awkward family photos with us.

What is your most used excuse?

“I never use excuses, she said. But if I need an excuse, I just say: ‘Sorry, I can’t.’ I’ve stopped explaining why I can’t. I used to always do that (‘I have a photoshoot then and need to pick up a new flash at Calumet, and then I have to edit the photos right away because they want them the next day. So I won’t make it, sorry.’). That’s actually too much explanation and feels more like using an excuse than just saying it straight: ‘I can’t. Period.’”

Which movie, TV show, or series makes you cry every time?

“There’s a Christmas movie that always gets aired in December, usually by the BBC, and I’ve seen it 15 times now: ‘It’s a wonderful life’. It’s a black-and-white film with James Stewart who (when everything goes wrong) exclaims: ‘I wish I was never born.’ His guardian angel decides to grant that wish and then it turns out what kind of influence James had during his life. This film is so beautifully touching that I’ve cried the last 12 times when only the opening title was visible.”

Your ultimate guilty pleasure?

“Singing very loudly and drumming along to great songs in the car. I’ve seen a few drivers in traffic jams pass by with their mouths open, because it apparently looks weird when you use the steering wheel, dashboard, and ceiling as a drum set. By the way, I mostly sing in the car when I’m alone; I can’t actually sing.”

Do you have an obsession?

“No. But there is a little voice in my head that challenges me with difficult things: ‘You wouldn’t dare.’ And then I do it anyway.”

What is your secret hobby?

“Hobby is too big a word, but I do take great pleasure in checking the site every now and then www.awkwardfamilyphotos.org. The photos on there are so hilariously bad that I sometimes get them in my mind when I have to take group portraits. And that’s the reason why I rarely take on a commission for a family portrait.”

What would people really not expect from you?

“No idea. I was surprised that some people were surprised that I stopped at the news. While I think: you could have seen that coming from miles away; how often did I talk about photography?”

What is your biggest pointless irritation?

“I’m a bit too cheerful to get irritated. Getting irritated is pointless anyway, unless you can do something about it. And then you have to take action to remove the irritation. If that doesn’t help, then it’s tant pis, as the French say.”

Which word do you actually use just a little too often?

“The word fun. Just because I like it.”
