How to handle:
curly hair in the summer
You wouldn't say it because I blow-dry them out every week (!), but I have an enormous head of curls. So I'm not very happy with it, because that stubborn bouncy hair is quite a hassle. Especially on vacation, when I don't have a hairdresser around. Then I look like a lioness with dreads. This is because curly hair has less moisture, causing the hair cuticles to be more open. This makes it naturally frizzier. With a lot of sun, it only gets worse, so how do we handle that mane in the summer?
Wash less
We all tend to wash our hair day or every two days. Don't do it! Especially curly hair really needs the oils from your scalp, and washing too often removes those faster. Wash your hair at most once or twice a week. Do you still want some freshness? Then use a dry shampoo. I just discovered this a delightful specimen from Bamboo, the mango-coconut scent is truly divine.
Good care
It's important to take good care of your hair with the right products. When the fine moment comes that you can wash your hair, make sure to use products for frizzy or curly hair. Redken just launched a new Frizz Dismiss-line, which is great for keeping those wild manes in check. What I always do is apply the mask (on wet hair) before going to bed. Then it can soak in all night and your hair feels as soft as a feather the next day. Wash it the next day with shampoo and a conditioner.
Styling
If you want to style your hair, so you want nice round curls instead of limp waves, first use a leave-in conditioner. I personally use this specimen from Redken. After that, use a serum or spray. Guhl has a very nice moisture-replenishing spray that is suitable if you have thicker curls. If you really have very fine curls, it's better to use a mousse. KMS has a special mousse for this, which also protects against heat. Finally, you can shape your curls by putting some wax between your thumb and index finger and giving the end of your curl a little twist.
Cutting
With curls, it's important to get them regularly cut into a good shape. Layers are preferred because different lengths make your curls stand out better. The best is to cut curls dry, then you can see immediately how it falls.
No oil
When you're lying on the beach with your wild mane, you might be tempted to use oil. This is really detrimental to your hair, as it dries out faster. So just take the serum from point three with you to hydrate it regularly.
Don't brush
You can certainly comb, but do this while your hair is still wet. When it's dry, leave the brush aside, as this will comb out your beautiful curls. Your fingers are good enough to style it.
