In our info@amayzine.com-mailbox we often receive requests concerning certain topics. Last week for example a reader asked us for advice for choosing a designer bag that is also suitable to take to the office. Now I think that’s a really good question.
If you must know I’m sort of in the middle of this process myself. Kind of like I’m browsing, keeping my eyes open for a bag big enough to hold my Macbook but is still a looker. Of course I have my red Stella McCartney bag but it doesn’t close at the top, something I found rather uncomfortable while walking the streets of a big city like New York. I’d love to have the Marc by Marc Classic Q Hillier Hobo, the huge variation. I own a small one that I still consider the perfect bag, once there was a large variation that could hold a laptop. I say once because, darn it, they’re not made anymore. So my search for the perfect bag continues and here are a few pointers one should take into consideration before finalizing the purchase.
size
It has to be large enough to hold a laptop, a notepad, maybe a charger, a tablet and then all that stuff women carry around with them. We’re talking a big guy because you don’t want the hassle of having to choose what to take to that important presentation, you might need your Macbook, your iPad and your notepad because you never know. Book an afternoon to go bag-hunting and take your laptop with you, you can try it on. Or take all the measurements and park yourself for an online shopping session.
Material
Choose leather. It’s the most sturdy, lasts the longest and looks the neatest. Especially if you’re carrying around a lot you need a strong specimen that won’t break down after a month of use.
color
I’m usually one for colorful designer bags (according to my theory they go with everything) but a business bag asks for a more neutral tone, especially when working in the corporate world. Black is, yes I agree, very boring but a nice dark blue or dark gray is very chic.
layout
Another downside of my Stella-bag is that it’s more of a large shopper, no compartments, meaning I have to do a lot of digging to find my stuff, it’s all one big mess and I can never find anything. A good business bag has a few compartments to hold small essentials so you don’t come across like an airhead when you need your business cards or a pen.
Fastening
Yes, it has to close with a zipper or something else, no matter, as long as you can close it somehow. You have expensive things with you that you don’t want to lose so make sure you minimize the chance for pickpockets.
Handle
Choose a bag that has a shoulder strap, because if it’s loaded with stuff it’s bloody irritating and very heavy if you continuously have to carry it around by its handle. Lots of bags have optional shoulder straps; you can just take it off if you don’t need it during lighter days.
