Rachel is one of the three lovely hair stylists at The Building AMS. We regularly stop by for a touch-up, and starting Saturday, she will show you cool hair tutorials on the site to do at home. But first, she talks about her own rituals and shares tips and tricks. And that’s what we want, because through her work backstage at shows like Givenchy and Gucci, Rachel knows exactly what you should and shouldn’t do.
Morning ritual
“I shower every morning, otherwise I don’t wake up and I always end with cold water. For my face, I use a face wash from Kiehl’s. Furthermore, I use the products from Knap Skincare. I find the skin of Winonah de Jong very beautiful and with the products from Knap Skincare, I try to replicate that skin. I have an Aruban skin, so I won’t get wrinkles quickly, but I do have issues with oily skin; so with impurities. Every time I apply the products, I think of Winonah’s skin. For breakfast, I eat some oatmeal with blueberries and I drink an espresso on-the-go. As for my hair, I wash it twice a week. I have done the Keratin treatment from Goldwell and I wash my hair with the shampoo that goes with it. The hair mask ‘Diamond Oil’ from Redken is also nice.”
5 minutes make-up
“In five minutes, I’m definitely done with my makeup. I always use the body and face products from M.A.C Cosmetics. Furthermore, I find the Sumptuous Infinite mascara from Estée Lauder very good. I always use a bronzer from The Bodyshop and on my lips a lip balm or lip pencil from SISLEY.”
Hair trend
“I really think the headband is a very cool trend. You see it either with very messy hair with a wave in it or with a messy topknot on the head. You style the hair off with a headband, which you don’t completely match to your clothing. It’s actually nice to choose something original. A leather band for example, or one with red stripes.”
Eyebrows or lashes
“Eyebrows. They really give shape to your face. If you don’t have the right eyebrow shape, they can make you look very dull. If you have very dark eyebrows, they give you a spicy look. I get my eyebrows done every two weeks at Saadet on the Ceintuurbaan. They work with a string. Furthermore, I don’t have to do anything else. Occasionally, I only use a transparent lip balm to shape them a bit.”
Favorite perfume
“Lola by Marc Jacobs is my favorite. I bought it again yesterday. It sounds a bit childish, but it’s very floral and that suits me well. I also have scents from Narciso Rodriguez and each package is provided with a spray of perfume. It makes unwrapping so much more fun. They thought about it, because when opening the bag, the experience begins, and that makes everyone happy. Think about that too. A card or a tag with a. They are all lovely, but don’t suit me as well.”
Backstage shows
“I have at worked backstage at many shows and I always find the Givenchy show a top show. Both the men’s and women’s shows are really fully packed. Such beautiful clothing. Two years ago, we did a look with small swimming caps and rosettes. It was insanely beautiful, but we spent ten hours on it. What’s also very cool is that all the top models walk in these shows. We are actually battling over who gets to do which model.” Best beauty investment”
“I find a
“really worth the effort and the money. I have curly hair and a lot of it. Because of this treatment, I can blow-dry my hair straight in five minutes. It stays very nice because of the treatment and the shine lasts much longer. It’s also very handy on vacation. Normally, I come out of the sea looking like some kind of afro, but now I still have a nice Keratin treatment from Goldwell beachy wave “Lip gloss. I have different brands, but my favorite is the Born Lippy from The Bodyshop.”.”
Never leave home without
“Someone I really find very attractive is Eva Mendes. She has, I think, a sexy look and is very feminine. She’s a bit like the Latina version of Cindy Crawford.”
