As I already told you (here) the last days of the trip were somewhere deep in the jungle of Peru. From Lima we flew to Iquitos, and then drove for a good hour to Nauta where the boat is ready that will take us through the bush for three days. Yes, I was going on a real cruise.
And quite a luxury cruise, with a large bedroom and a beautiful upper deck and a small company of about 20 people. As you might expect from a cruise, the average age was on the high side, but that didn't spoil the fun. So three days, and we filled those days with “skiff explorations” and a lot of delicious food. A skiff is a small boat where we went with about 8 people to “explore.” The guides were truly unbelievable at recognizing every bird or monkey and tirelessly pointed out one marsh harrier after another and spotted the smallest Rain King Fishers or Amazon King Fishers sitting on the tops of trees.
They pointed out those birds using the clock system and the eye level system. The bow of the boat is then twelve o'clock, a bit to the side is one o'clock, and so it goes on. Then, a bird that is at eye level is at “eye level,” a specimen that is slightly higher is at “middle forest,” and even higher is “high forest.” So it went like this: “Look guys, there’s a Black Colored Hawk at eleven o'clock at middle forest!” And man, did I feel adventurous!
Otters shoot by, dozens of little monkeys, squirrels, caimans, we spot gigantic fish and later during the trip even piranhas. May I just mention that I personally caught 3 (THREE!) piranhas? Just drop me in the wild, I’ll survive easily.
We also took a walk through the jungle, I got bitten by a thousand mosquitoes (that was of course to be expected) and we enjoyed delicious three-course dinners. Really, such a cruise is not bad at all. The only downside might be that the average age, as mentioned, was quite high, but that also had a certain charm and besides, it was nice and quiet.
After the cruise, we fly back to Lima, and then the last day arrives. We pack our bags, check out, and fill our last day with visiting the historic part of Lima – which is really enormously beautiful and impressive. And then, it’s time to go. I got to fly back business class (I already told you about that here in detail) and arrived back wonderfully rested.
In summary? Peru is really amazing, but a week is really too short. Soon I will delight you with a short travel guide about the places I have been (Lima, Paracas, Ica, and Iquitos), so if you are flying to Peru soon (yes! Do it!), keep an eye on Amayzine. For now, I have nothing more to say than: goodbye Peru, you were fantastic and you can bet that you will see me again soon.
