We followers of fashion throw ourselves with full dedication and enthusiasm into trends that are prescribed to us every season again. Strangely enough, this also means fashion items that we found terrible at first glance turn out to be popular after a while and get time to shine for a season and sometimes even longer. What is “difficult” fashion, what do we do with it, and how can it be that something ugly can be found beautiful or attractive at a certain moment?

One of the reasons could be that we want to maintain our status as fashionistas. Personally, I find it more plausible that when you see something repeatedly, it gives familiarity at a certain moment. The shows, the magazines, and the fashion reports that you often have burned into your retina long before the start of a particular season contribute significantly to adjusting your taste and your thoughts about what you find beautiful and ugly can change.

Of course, it is ultimately up to you to decide how a trend fits into your life, but I advise you to take your own style into account and only wear what truly suits you. In any case, try to avoid letting clothing wear you; wear it because you like it and not just because it happens to be a trend.

5 “difficult” fashion trends:

VOLUME

We all like it when our hair has a bit of volume, but volume in our clothing? Think of a sturdy fabric like neoprene (a heavy elastic rubber used for wetsuits, among other things) that was suddenly embraced by influential designers like Alexander Wang. In my opinion, a fashion faux pas that even makes a size zero look thick. If you wear something with volume, try to find a good balance: a wide skirt made of a sturdy fabric with a top that fits from a flowing fabric.

SOCKS with SHOES

Pumps with a little sock... who oh who has committed this serious fashion crime? Anyway, if you do it, don't just grab any pair of socks from your drawer. The combination of color and quality must be considered.

OVERALLS

The overall has been back in fashion for a few seasons now. For a long time, this garment had a negative connotation because it was mainly worn by tough women who were averse to any form of elegance. The difference now is that you wear the overall super feminine and elegant: with pumps, a décolleté, and in a fabric that flows nicely. I advise against the variation salopette (dungarees). Unless you are no older than 12 and don't have breasts yet...

CROP TOP

Also this season, there are designers promoting the bare belly again. Even if you've trained hard and your belly is Gwen Stefani-flat, women over a certain age shouldn't show too much skin. Here too, it's better to leave this trend to very young girls. Do you still want to hint at this trend? Then tie a jeans or shirt blouse at your waist. This way, you show a little skin without it looking naked.

SANDALS

Everything indicates that the trend in sandals continues. Ugly models, inspired by Birkenstocks or worse: the Adidas flip-flop. In short, the sandal has expanded its territory from walking routes to the catwalk, including Velcro and profile soles. Celebrities like the Olsen twins and Gwyneth Paltrow can't live without them. Do what you want with it. I see this trend as a welcome solution for a comfortable and functional walking shoe, so except on vacation, you won't catch me in them.
