Imagine this: New York, Fashion Week, freezing cold and snow. In front of Lincoln Centre, Spring Studios, and some cool warehouse by some pier, fashion editors, bloggers, and a few wannabes are parading. Vain (think Paris Hilton), braving the terrible cold and especially busy getting captured on camera by streetstyle spotters. Any idea how to recognize the real fashionista? Exactly… she doesn’t let herself be known and makes no concessions to comfort and protection.
Even if her toes are freezing: she does not and will never wear tights. And yet I want to – think Kate Middleton – take this opportunity to make a plea for tights. A beautiful super thin transparent pair of tights from a good brand, of good quality and in a good color can work wonders. It’s all about how you wear them. A skin-colored smooth super thin pair of tights with a little black dress looks really super chic.
Other advantages:
Transparent tights are like makeup for your legs.
Perhaps not unimportant: men often find stockings attractive.
Cellulite and other imperfections remain hidden.
Especially for official occasions (think wedding and funeral) wearing stockings is recommended.
Make sure you always have a pair of skin-colored stockings in your wardrobe drawer. Always handy if you suddenly have to appear somewhere where the dress code is a bit official. Personally, I am also very charmed by transparent black, which I find just a tad sexier. Up to you…
More panty dilemmas
Do you wear stockings in open-toed shoes?
No, unless you are doing competitive ballroom dancing. I know there are plenty of women who have no trouble with that, but personally, I prefer to give my winter legs a little color with a spray.
Black stockings and colored shoes
Also something. Never do it unless you want to look like Minnie Mouse. The other way around is no problem: colored stockings with black shoes is fine.
Lace or fishnet stockings
I would say: never wear to work unless you are in the oldest profession. But outside of that, lace stockings can be super sexy. Especially if you combine them with a simple basic dress. Strangely enough, fishnet stockings are more accepted in the office, as long as the holes aren’t too huge.
The fantasy tights
Pop up every now and then, depending on the fashion image. Good chance you’ll come across nice striped or floral examples again with all those influences from the sixties and seventies. Fine, but I advise to take it easy with leg decoration after your 25th (okay 30th).
