If anyone is dedicated to charitable causes, it is Hanna Verboom. The blonde beauty is currently working on a new project in collaboration with the World Food Programme. She wanted to tell us all about it and of course also about what her weekend will look like. And it's not bad...
Hanna, you have entered into a collaboration with the World Food Programme. What does this entail?
Yes, that's correct. They asked me to raise awareness for the World Food Programme. They come up with practical solutions to prepare food in a healthy way in developing countries. It is a global fight against hunger. What we sometimes forget is that we are not there yet with just the food itself. It also needs to be prepared, and in Sudan, that is very dangerous. The women need wood to cook, and the search for wood is not always safe. There is, for example, a danger of rape. The SAFE program provides practical solutions for that.
You lived in Africa for a long time where your parents did development work. Has this had a big influence on you?
Absolutely. I lived there for so long that I just don't know any better. So it has certainly influenced me and has also made me interested in that work. You grow up and see certain things. And I still travel a lot. That is part of my life, and I find it very important to bring those kinds of stories to light.
Some time ago, you directed your own short film. Does that make you want to do more?
It was really amazing, so it definitely makes me want to do more. I hope to start a new film project this year. In addition, I am currently busy with Cinetree; a monthly selection of the best films and documentaries that you can watch on all devices. Film lovers like Carice van Houten, Joris Luyendijk, and Jan Jaap van de Wal share their favorite film choices there. I am now working on that full-time. By the end of this year, I hope to be in front of the camera again.
How do you kick off your weekend on Friday? Do you have anything planned?
I'm going to London on Friday. A lovely weekend away with a girlfriend. We're staying at The Hoxton, a really nice hotel in Shoreditch, a neighborhood with many vintage shops and galleries. I'm really looking forward to walking around there, enjoying the art, and having a nice meal.
What are your favorite hotspots to go to on the weekend?
When I'm free, I like to go to museums or shows. Foam is a favorite, the photography museum in Amsterdam. So I go there regularly and of course to the movies. I live in Amsterdam-West, so I like to go to the FilmHallen. You can also eat very well in the halls; it feels a bit like New York.
If you didn't have to worry about time and money, what would your ideal weekend look like?
I am often in Africa, and I am currently looking to see if I can buy a piece of land in Namibia. I want to build a lodge there, a dream project. Many animals are taken care of on this piece of land, like little giraffes, and you can take care of them. Of course, I hope my friends will come by so we can build campfires under the African starry sky.
Does Saturday look different for you than Sunday?
For me, Sunday is really a day of rest. For example, I also go to church. Afterwards, I usually have a long lunch with friends and family. I love Sundays and try not to plan anything on that day. Saturdays are cultural, going to an exhibition or just good old-fashioned vacuuming the floors with loud music on.
The last question already. Do you set an alarm on Monday, and if so, for what?
On Monday, the alarm goes off at 7. First, I go for a run and then still rush to get to the office on time. We always start the week with a meeting with the team. I am lucky to work with the nicest people, so I get up every day with pleasure.
