I have mentioned before about my ‘over the top taste’. I prefer to dress in striking clothes with a bit of a quirk. Very cool of course, but there are occasions where you need to hold back. Meeting your in-laws is one such case. A good first impression is crucial because your future parents-in-law need to see at a glance how nice, charming, reliable, and perfect you are for their son. When I became too comfortable with my lovely mother-in-law after a few months and showed up in bright red, shiny, and too tight American Apparel leggings, that poor woman almost had a stroke.
It's logical that you should keep your makeup simple. Still, you need to feel comfortable and beautiful because most parents love strong and confident ladies next to their offspring. I have put together a lovely subtle and understated package:
Dream Wonder Nude from Maybelline, €14.49, is a light foundation that you only need a drop of. It covers just enough but prevents a plastered face.
The Sunshine Blush from Artdeco, €18.95, gives a modest glow. We want to look healthy, of course. Because taking good care of ourselves means taking good care of their son.
What a lovely palette this is. The soft colors Mist, Toast & Port from Iredale Mineral Cosmetics, €47.30, are definitely parent-proof. Make sure to work from light to dark and from the inside out.
Lash Sensational from Maybelline, €15.49, provides subtle long and well-separated lashes. A thick volumizing mascara is really a no-go.
Your lips can shine a bit but not too much. The Bonfire from Clinique, €22,-, gives a slight light red tone to your lips and stays put well.
We color the nails in subtle pink: well-groomed yet understated. The Suzi Shops & Island Hops from O.P.I., €14.25, fits perfectly.
If there's one thing you don't want, it's for your partner's family members to feel nauseous from your heavy scent. That's why I choose Eternity Summer, €54.50,: a fresh perfume from Calvin Klein that makes you smell like a light fruit basket.
Especially no loose hair. You never know where it will hang, and with a bun, you can shake your head carefree. Keep it with the Jelly Wax, €9.08, from Keune.
Wearing shiny red pants is just as silly as ordering spinach on a date. A black blouse always works well. Even if you get nervous and sweat excessively. To brighten things up, wear a nice knee-length floral skirt over it. If you're not in the mood for black and your armpits are under control, go for a white tank top up to the neck with wide pants underneath. Today is not about showing off your slender figure that you've worked years for. It's about making a good impression and especially not giving your father-in-law any fantasy food.
